Bedtime basing

I think I saved these…

I have now got everyone onto the mdf bases. This took a lot of extra hole drilling, cutting off of plastic tabs and in the case of the dog lobbing some hot glue onto the base to support it.

Ready for basing gunk which is basically:

PVA

Sawdust

Brown house paint

Mixed together and plopped onto the base.

They are now sitting on the radiator drying off.

Next up is the angst of how to base them. Frostgrave takes place in a city that has just reappeared after spending one thousand years under ice. The question is…. do I add snow to my bases. If I do then basically Frostgrave and Icy areas are all they are good for. We shall have to see.

Lunchtime Mage

Dropped a clanger with these:

In my keenness to get these done I picked up the wrong wash for the colours on the tunic. My idea was a dark wash over the darker colours and a light wash over the pale colours… DOH!

Glazing has made some effect on the colour, but I do think it is going to have to come down to a bit of a repaint.

On the upside I do have a pot of Iraqui sand with me which is a darker tone than the Bonewhite.

With a mix of the two and a steady hand I may be able to paint it into the creases and even wet blend to the ridges.

We shall see how I get on… (Note to self – take the paint home with you 🙂 )

Updated Ostarian Colours

I decided to do a bit of colouring at coffee break, it was either that or scream and shout and start flinging things about the office….. I am calm, I am calm, I am calm……..

Anyway I decided to have a mess about with the Ostarian flags. The way the original triangles were coloured black and white caused a few problems, although not insurmountable they were still a niggle.

This is the updated result. I am not quite sure Which I like the best?

The top is the original and the bottom the updated one.

I will have to have a fiddle around with some more colour combinations to work out which I like the best.

Speedy Ghouls

I found these earlier…

So I repainted them. I was intending to be in bed early tonight….that plan failed. The reason for painting them? I was going to sell them and they looked really naff in their chipped basecoat!

I decided to mess around with some blood effects I went for a more dried look, but I think it needs highlighting up a bit

They basically started out like this… evidently 15 years rolling around in a box did them no good. Not to mention…what flesh base colour was that? They look jaundiced, well I suppose a life of living in graveyards and not getting many green vegetables will take its toll.

Thinking back I vaguely remember actually gaming with these in my Vampire gang for Mordheim. Apart from the bases I kind of thought they were finished at the time.😱😱😱

This is where I think finding old figures is handy. Even though this was a speedy job to get them into a game it really does show how far I have come. There is no attempt at shading, highlighting or pretty much anything else apart from flesh, bone coloured bone, pink tongue, a grey loincloth and a black dot for the eyes. I did however paint the edge of their bases!

Now to be honest the mark 2 paint job is far from perfect and in a strange way was a speed job too. I might get another flesh glaze on them and see how that looks.

I think it is down to the if I could improve one thing – what would it be?

I painted them with these two brushes… One has a bend and the other doesn’t have a point

I have a whole host of new brushes never out of their packets, just too lazy to walk to the other end of the house to find them.

I really need to sort out a way to take better photos….

First Fire Festival of the year

Scalloway Fire festival last night.

This is a short time lapse of the procession going past.

Undead with Heads

I got some heads on these chaps last night. The old GW makes it a right bugger to mix and match. The Mordheim figures have a flat head connection whereas the zombies have a bump and hollow connection. After much swearing 🤬I added a little ball of Milliput onto the neck and left it overnight to dry (sadly I had run out of Greenstuff). This morning I superglued all the bits together.

These will become savant zombie Militia.

Sadly the Peppa Pig jumping pigs 🐖 is no more 🐷🐷🐷

Undead Extras

Another unit ready to start…

I was having a mooch through my box of plastics and came across a couple or Mordheim gangs.

The human gang will become another unit of militia, more recently dead ones, but a lot are armed with firearms (obviously traders looking to make their fortunes in the Witchlands).

The second gang I found were the original Skaven. These two had lost their tails and it made me wonder if it would be possible to make them some kind of ghoul or other weird denizen of the Witchlands.

I will see what happens when I stick a zombie head on them…..

Frostgrave

It has been a while…

Sadly life got in the way of painting pretty much anything. Family things, building the hay shed etc all took their toll on the painting side of things. Tonight will be no exception … Harry Potter – Half Blood prince. Luckily my wife got a daylight bulb Ledgle Neck LED Reading Lamp. It sits around one’s neck and has 4 LED’s. It isn’t brilliant in terms of casting a shadow, but it means I can paint and watch the DVD at the same time.

Well I bit the bullet and bought Frostgrave. To begin with we are going to use what we have figure wise. I have plastic Perry Hundred Years’ War French and English infantry, not to mention bucket loads of LOTR figures.

I bought the boar….well because I wanted a boar. I have hundreds of GW giant plastic rats from hero quest or whichever one had the plastic rats and bats. The boar will come in handy for a nice little boar hunt game.

So here is my first mess around with my warband/retinue.

1 x warhound: (proxy at the moment) I have some nice Celtic war hounds about somewhere.

2 x thugs: Uruk without shield

1 x thief: Uruk without shield and missing a sword (I might give him a torch) – I do happen to have a pile of LOTR halflings too 🙂

2 x archers: Rohirrim

1 x infantry: Rohirrim

1 x man at arms: Rohirrim

Wizard… Gandalf from the fellowship set…. really torn here as I don’t want to split him from the others in the set.

I also have the plastic Gandalf from the Hobbit, but again he is part of the whole set of figures.

Oooooh just thought…. I have a Celtic Druid who might want to leave cold and wet Britannia\Gaul and go to freezing cold Frostgrave. Come to think of it, my Gauls could become Barbarians. I have suddenly come to the conclusion that I am hoarding far too much stuff. As an example I also have the hero’s of Helm’s Deep sitting there.

I still haven’t got round to choosing a school of magic yet.

My eldest daughter has decided to use these as her Witch and apprentice.

We will remove them from these bases and rebase them onto the same base as the rest of the troops.

Ferach, Dwarves and Trollkin

I got a little bit further on these…

They are lovely figures to paint. Still a ways to go, the blue needs highlighting as well as shading as does the hair on the front two. We are having a family Harry Potter DVD session every evening so this has reduced my painting time, 2 down 5 to go 👍

Daytime painting is curtailed due to shed building.
