Wargs and Riders

Tonight was ‘Return of the King’ Part 1. Huzzah!

So in honour of another Tolkien night I finished the Wargs as well as the riders.

To be honest, they aren’t the best painted for a couple of reasons. First is I did them fast and wanted them out of the way and secondly the soft detail on these isn’t much use for Contrast paint.

I didn’t bother with a lot of the straps etc. Having these the same colour as the main leatherwork.

The lighting has given these an odd colour, the one on the right isn’t actually green skinned.

Hopefully I will get some of the ork infantry painted tomorrow when the final Lord of the Rings film is done.

Back to work tomorrow, a couple of days of training etc then back into school with the kids on Wednesday.

Coloured Furry Wargs

So the Two Towers is finished and we are onto the Return of the King. We watch part one tomorrow evening.

Anyway, these evening I undercoated the Greenstuff white and messed around tidying up the other Uruk minis.

I then proceeded to get some paint onto the wargs. The Gore Grunta brown, seemed a little pale, so I gave it a bit of a shake, then tried again on a second one… still a bit pale..”twas then I realised it wasn’t what I thought it was!

But in the words of Bob Ross, there are no mistakes only happy little accidents!

Still a fair bit to go on them as I want to darken the top of them a bit more as well as paint in teeth etc.

Today was a bit of a nightmare, okay total exaggeration there, as we are in the eye of the storm, or one has past and another is on its way, but anyway we decided to take the trailer full of rubbish into the tip, I pumped up the tyre as it was flat, got to the top of the track and it fully blew out… so I swore and undid the spare, only to find I needed a different sized spanner to get the wheel off. Luckily we were close to home, (200m in fact) so I mooched back down the track to find something in one of the other cars. Luckily one of them fit, so in 0c I had to get a tyre changed. Luckily the bolts all came out, one fought me all the way! So 25 minutes later we set off again. Only to find all the skips in the dump were pretty much full. Not to be stopped we managed to squeeze everything in somehow. I really felt for all of the people behind us as we just about got stuff in, they had sod all chance unless their cars, vans and pickups were all full of wood, metal or garden waste.

We will try and get the fridge in tomorrow, luckily that just get stood in a compound. I say try as the gales and rain are back with a vengeance tomorrow.

Furry Wargs

There was no painting tonight during the Two Towers part 1. Instead I decided to tidy up the Wargs and riders…

I cracked open the Greenstuff and hid the joint lines along the leg and shoulder and across the rear. I bought these years ago from Ebay and have eventually got around to making a Start in them.

I will get the Greenstuff undercoated tomorrow and see if I can find any more in any of my hiding places. I also had a hunt on Ebay for some of the LOTR wood elves and there seem to be none. I have enough Uruk Hai for a whole army. Some more bow armed ones would be good too.

Well I just went on a Foray to both Sheds and I can’t find anything (apart from gazillions of Uruk). I did manage to just about freeze my nadgers off. Gale force winds and hail is not a good combination by anyone’s standards. I must admit I thought I had more than three of these Wargs.

So, although the Hobbit film Wargs are more like they should be, It might look a bit weird mixing up the two.

I may have to give you all a warming story tomorrow…

Aragorn and the Ork

Okay it does sound like a Progressive rock band, but it is some more mini painting.

You know what, I don’t think I like these, maybe it is just the colours and after painting lots of bright things perhaps these just look a bit bland. Not sure what happened to the reins, I must have caught it with some brown when I was adding the brown to the base, it is still wet in this photo.

I will have a look at them again tomorrow and see what I think in better light.

Fellowship of the Ring is finished, tomorrow onto the Two Towers…

Lots more things to paint ๐Ÿ˜‰

Chaos, Aragorn and a pile of Nasty Orkses

Tonight we started on the Lord of the Ringsathon. One film every night until we have watched them all… so I nipped out into the shed, located this lot and sprayed them white…

I also had a blast at finishing the Chaos marines…

I though I had finished them until I saw the photo! I still need to do the eyes on the one in the middle.

Shouldn’t take long to do that, unless I throw red paint everywhere.

So once these were finished I made a start on these two…

I will carry on with them tomorrow.

Oh whilst I remember… the painting competition….

I was pleasantly surprised that I was in the top three for a number of classes….

Fantasy Small Miniature…3rd with 6.67% of the vote

Sci Fi Small miniature … 3rd with 10%

Fantasy large miniature…didn’t enter

Sci Fi large miniature… didn’t enter

Fantasy unit… not placed in top 3, but one of them got 3rd in small miniature above

Sci fi unit… 2nd with 26.67% of the vote.

All in all very pleased to be placed at all as there was some really awesome painting on show.

2019 Round-up…

This is a rewrite of the post I did last night. Somehow it disappeared. If truth be told, it might have been a case of user error as I was tired and hurrying to get it finished before midnight! Update, having just nearly done it again, it is not a good idea to hit discard draft instead of update draft.

On the non hobby front, I ended up with two new jobs. The first was in the back end of May being a temporary Deputy Head Teacher (vice Principal) of one of our two High Schools. This was a secondment until I started on as the Head Teacher of one of our small Primary schools. In June and July this had a massive knock on effect on both my painting and blogging. In June I managed only six posts and about ten in July, partly for being knackered and secondly we went on our hols to Orkney. Since the start of August I have blogged every day for 148 days straight.

To be honest in the vast majority of those days I have managed to paint something, sometimes whole units and other times I might have managed to paint a bit of braid on a couple of miniatures. I have also tried to show a bit of where I live as well as giving the odd interesting story from Shetland.

So anyway, what have I painted this year?

Probably not as much as I would have liked, but yeah, life and work sometimes gets in the way. To be fair, I reckon that the use of this paint has speeded up my rate of getting things painted.

These are a case in point…

All done in a Harry Potter film. From white undercoat to Finished in one sitting isn’t too shabby, to be fair they weren’t the most complicated of miniatures to finish .

So onto the quasi list….

4 DBA/DBM\HOTT Armies

I really noticed the difference in painting these. Way back into last January I made a start on the 10mm Wood Elf Army. This was done in two parts, the first part was painted in regular GW/AP paint and took forever, there were a few posts on how slow they were. And I quote “nearly lost the will to live but pushed through the barriers of whatever was stopping me getting on with them.” The second part (See below) was done with Contrast paint and it really, really speeded things up. These were done in about 4 hours over a weekend.

I also painted up:

A Conquistador Force

An Aztec Army

A Scalian Army

I also painted up various other random 10 and 15mm minis I had lying around.

again, Contrast paint made all the difference.

I painted a whole load of infantry for Starship Troopers as well as the odd Bug

j

A lot of September was printing and painting tanks and making/printing terrain

for the Games Day

Later on again in terms of 28mm, I managed to get both forces from Beastgrave painted…

Some troops and nasties for Aliens

I also painted more troops for Flintloque

And finally onto some Harry Potter minis and some GW minis too

This is not an exhaustive list, I have painted various other bits and pieces of 3D printed stuff too as well as other miniatures.

The 3D Printer has been busy this year, it has gone through three rolls of filament.

Well done if you have managed to make it to the end of this post

So rather than say what I am planning for next year, I will leave that for another post tomorrow.

Big Nurgle Thingies

So tonight in our final Film of the Harry Potterthon I managed to get some work done on these fine fellows…

They still have a fair bit to go but I am getting there.

I would have got further but this happened!

I would go as far as saying that I might have uttered the odd expletive or thirty. Although evidently I am a pillock, a numpty and no doubt a knob head for not putting the pot in the holder I printed at least I am a stingy one and managed to get a fair bit back in the pot.

The printer was busy again…

Meeple orks to go with the goblins… as can be seen not all of them came out perfectly.

I also printed some stairs and a few doors…

Again there was something up with these prints…

As can be seen there was a load of stringing.

I haven’t used this colour PLA before, it is the same manufacturer, but perhaps the temperature tolerance is different. Either that or there could be some extrusion issues, the bed might be the wrong height or a whole host of other reasons that need checking out. Once the new build plates arrive then I can see what is what a bit easier.

Got mates coming round to see the new year in tomorrow, so if I don’t get to wish you all a happy New Year, then please accept it now. I wish you all Health, Wealth and happiness for 2020 when it arrives…

Nurgle Thingumybobs

So today I have had the chance to get these painted during this evening’s Harry Potterthon (tonight was Deathly Hallows part 1).

Now to be honest I haven’t got a clue about Chaos Forces in 40k. These Pox walkers came in my Son’s Christmas Present.

We made a start on the Space Marines using the colours he chose…

This set has six marines, six pox walkers and three Nurgle marines.

Regarding the painted troops, I am really pleased with how they turned out. I have never painted anything like these before. I reckon my rusty metal needs a bit more work but apart from that they weren’t too bad to paint. I suppose the trickiest one was the one with the elephant trunk and axe as he has straps going across his chest and shoulders as well as his waist.

Tomorrow I will help him carry on with the marines. Funnily enough, I have all of these miniatures from when they did the Conquest magazine. In fact I have two or three lots of Death Guard and two or three of the Primaris marines.

Harry, Won-Won and the Death Eaters

So tonight we carried on with our family Harry Potterthon. Tonight was the Half Blood Prince. So I thought I might as well get Harry and Ron painted.

So that is the three friends done apart from a varnish and the bases sorted.

I also finished off the Death Eaters for my eldest.

My youngest has decided on Black Space Marines.. I showed him the Black Templars, which he liked. He has decided to have gold edging on the shoulder guards and a different coloured cross. I was about to get All ‘oh no, chapter approved’ nonsense and I thought Bollocks he could paint them pink if he wants. He is nine and he can go with whatever he fancies.

Ho loves Mec’s. It suddenly dawned on me that Tau would have given him a pile of ‘mec’ options in the Crisis suits.

Tomorrow we are onto the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Who knows what I will paint during that.

Happy Christmas… Hussars all Finished

So Mr Beardy came today and I got some nice gifts, but as a family we have been carrying on with our Harry Potter marathon, just watched the fourth film, however it did give me time to get the Hussars finished.

I am really pleased with how these came out colour wise. Totally inaccurate both historically as well as canon in the world of Valon. However I am not really too fussed as I have decided upon the uniforms as C in C of my forces ๐Ÿ˜‰.

This means I am down to the Ostarian artillery and crews to get done for my Flintloque Forces (come to think of it I might have some Cuirassiers to do too). If I have both then I have a dozen miniatures to do (well that is until I buy some more – really interested in Kitton ๐Ÿ˜)

Artillery and some of the crew are below… I will have to decide upon the uniform colour for this lot.

I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and look forward to seeing what people got ๐Ÿ˜‰.

Luckily I got some cash as I had a bit of a crisis with my print plate on the printer. The print failed and has left a nasty residue that is about 0.2mm high and is an absolute swine to get off. It might be the case that I need a new plate if I scratch this one too much.
