Resin People and the Undead

My next rock group name … Resin People and the Undead.

So today, after my successful first print I decided to have a go at some miniatures. These are some of the Ill Gotten Games Townsfolke.

As I said I would, I went and washed some in ISO and some in meths. I printed a single mini too which I washed in soapy water.

So what do they look like?

The details are quite soft on the faces, I think that this is under exposure as the print cures. I will need to dial things in a bit and re test.

But anyway, the ones on the left were washed in ISO and the ones on the right in meths. Not to be honest I can’t tell the difference at first glance. They were all put outside in the sun and left for a few hours then taken inside and put under the lamp.

As mentioned I also printed another milk maid and this time washed her in soapy water. Once washed I coated it in washing up lights and rubbed it in, then rinsed off and threw it under the lamp (it was dark by time she was ready).

This is where things got interesting….

The one on the left is the one done in water and the other is the one done with ISO. Now they are definitely different colours under the light. One has just gone under the light the other has been outside and then spent a few hours under the lamp.it will be interesting to see if they both end up the same colour this time tomorrow. The others look dark as they were out of the direct light source.

I also managed to get my Undead up to the basing level. Hopefully tomorrow I will get them done and onto the next thing.

Busy, Busy, Undead and Resin

Today has been a busy one, but I managed to get some painting done as well as working with resin with the kids.

I got the undead a bit further forward as well as finishing the ogres and the cart and draft oxen (I just need to find the wagons now).

I also found my 6mm Arabs from WW1. They are painted so I just need to do the Turks and I am laughing 😉.

The kids made some more resin pieces, but I also bit the bullet and got a start on unboxing the printer…

Guess what is in here?

Levelling with paper… I can do that.

To level it you place a piece of paper on the base, and click a button. The printer plate moves down and when it is right down one simply tightens the four silver bolts d voila… press another button to tell it that it is zeroed in and that’s it… ready to print.

All it together and ready to go… I put the square against it so you can see the rough size of it.

I had to print the test cube as I actually couldn’t work out how to slice the bits I wanted to print. Sadly you will have to wait until tomorrow before seeing what it looks like. I am pretty impressed so far as I could never have done it on the Ender3.

Like the Ender it tells me the print time and the amount of material used. I evidently put way too much resin in the holder. Luckily I can reuse the stuff that doesn’t cure. I can run it through a fine sieve and then put it back into the bottle.

This is the start of a very large learning curve as this thing can make hollow prints to save on resin, these hollow prints need plug holes adding to allow the interior liquid resin to escape.

Now I bought grey resin as it seemed a good idea at the time, however having done a bit more research (aka watching YouTube) it is suggested that clear resins might be better as it allows the UV light to pass through the object and cure it faster.

I have got myself a couple of pots, one with ISO in and the other with meths. Again watching YouTube people who can’t get ISO easily were using meths to clean the prints before curing. Tomorrow I will print a couple of Milk maids off and give each a go in the different liquids. I have seen some people use hot water too, so perhaps that will be a third one to test.

Print comes off the plate in 20 minutes or so, so wish me luck!

Big, Teeny Tiny Parcels, Undead and Chickens

Today may Irregular order came…yippeee, and I never finished my undead…boooo! The box was massive, compared to what I am used to – who cares, it had metal goodies inside…

On the left a Khmer army complete with hefalumps and on the right various packs of civilians, some Ikko Ikki monks and Nobori holders and then a Samurai hero set. The last two are to make command units for my army.

Sadly I was too knackered to paint much tonight and it was the tedious painting of weapons that finished me off.

These still have a long way to go, but the horrible bit (or one of the horrible bits) is over. Next up shields and metalwork.

Today we made another step closer to being a true Shetlander 😂. Yes indeed, we have now built a hen run covered in a trawl net. Clobbering in a pile of fencing posts didn’t do my wrists much good.

We have been asked to bake for Sunday Teas, dug our own peat (cast as they call it up here), sat on a hall committee. We are certainly ticking things off our list. If I ever get invited onto a fire festival squad then I know I will have made it 😂😂😂.

The cockerel was lovely last year, but this year he has matured and is now going for the kids, hence the need to keep him in a fully enclosed run. We have him and three hens, so this is plenty big enough for them. It is about 6 metres by 4 metres. They will also be let out too, this is until he calms down.

Bring Out Your Teeny, Tiny Undead

I got these sprayed yesterday and made a start today. They were pretty speedy to get to this level. Probably three hours tops, but I was watching Tomb Raider at the same time…

These aren’t the best sculpts and are probably the worst of the ones I have done so far. They will probably come out fine once they are finished as most things do.

There are eight bases of cavalry, four of bow, eight of hand weapons as well as a couple of hero bases. A Napoleonic Officer has decided to help out as the general and a base of elves have died to help out too (I was one strip short. That will be my elite unit with the red flag.

I also had a mooch today and found my 6mm road wars.

These are my raiders civilians and mutants. I also have a paramilitary force of (basically) Sisters of Battle.

This is my convoy… I need to get the girlies based and painted. Sadly the road wars gear can only be got from the states now. Which is a bit pants as I want some of the big rigs. They also do a nice line in Lizardmen cavalry (which mine are sadly missing).

Tomorrow I hope to get the Skellies finished. Then I may start on the sci fi stuff.

We played with the resin today too…

Once again we had fun…. talking of resin… hopefully I will get a space sorted for the printer soon 🤞

Halflings and UV Resin fun

I have been promising the kids for a while now that we could get some resin done. So they promised to help me to get the shed cleared out to allow us to set unit up as a craft workshop. This isn’t too bad as it is about 2/3 the size of the house (I have a little house).

So we messed around and set up the various UV lights, one of the bottles of resin had leaked a bit so as I went outside to wash it I suddenly remembered it cured in sunlight and voila easy clean up!

So here are some bits curing under the lights.

And here is a finished pendant as done by my eldest, they did other things as well, but they went as gifts before I got them photographed.

We had good fun messing around with the colours. We learned a few things on the way. Safety protocols were in place to keep us safe, just in case you were wondering.

Tonight I didn’t get a huge amount done as friends came over for a Takeout Chinese meal. They were here quite late, so I didn’t get started until gone nine. But at least the halflings are finished.

I came across an unexpected problem with 6mm halfling basing.

I spent ages looking for one of the bases and couldn’t find it anywhere. I l found it when I went to add some flock to the next base…

It’s a case of ‘where are the Halflings?’

Tomorrow, I will finish of the various bits and bobs on the box which is the grand total of two ogres, four wolf chariots, and a few wagons. I will get the skeleton host sprayed too.

Seaside Shenanigans, Dive Bombing and Halflings

As you might have guessed there is never really a dull moment in my household. Today we met up with my sister and family and went rock pooling and plodging in the sea…sadly no orca in sight, which probably pleased the three seals that came to say hello.

As you can imagine, with such a nice day the beach was heaving…

You can just about see my sis in the distance!

We kept getting dive bombed by a pair of arctic tern. Luckily they didn’t draw blood but it made life interesting for a while… we suddenly found the reason why!

My niece was actually stood with one foot either side of it… needles to say we took a quick photo and moved away.

We tried a bit of rock pooling, as I said. I was extremely successful…

I also managed To catch some young Pollack (I think). So we returned home and whilst we watched Fantastic Beasts I managed to get my halflings finished and onto their bases.

Tomorrow I will get them flocked up and ready to join the rest.

Birthday Haul, Cake and Halflings

Today I got a pile of nice things for my birthday…

No surprises as I ordered them for myself, but it was the thought that counts 😂

I am pleased with the Battle Valour stuff as I am the only person to have Some of them cue evil laugh… Mwa ha ha ha . Well okay someone may have ordered from the states, but I got mine from the only uk distributor.

I got some Ashigaru with yari as well as some more samurai. The other new things are the witches and a seer who has a cat face, the. There are the Oni hounds both large and effing huge. I also got Featherstone’s play with yourself book. I am still a bit worried that I might not find anyone to play with.

My eldest made me a cake…

I also managed to get my halflings nearly finished…

Just the bases and weapons to do.

Nature update… we put a feeder up last year for the birds and as a family of starlings was nesting nearby I thought I would help out by adding mealworms and fat balls… they have been very popular, then today this happened…

Tomorrow I hope to finish my halflings then maybe onto the skeletons, I also found my 6mm road wars stuff that definitely needs finishing.

Super Teeny Halflings

By definition halflings are small, so as you can imagine 1:300 scale halflings are very small indeed.

These were sprayed yesterday so had 24 plus hours to cure. I decided to make them colourful as befits a halfling force. Still a good old bit to do but getting there.

I got an email from Irregular today to say that my parcel was on its way. Now that is a pretty speedy turnaround considering I ordered it on the 4th July and today is the 6th.

That reminds me, tomorrow I can celebrate by getting my Birthday present of more of the Battle Valour Samurai bits and pieces. My mate Martin let me know that they had come into his the country…so I managed to get them before they went onto the online store. I thought they would make a fitting pressie… prepare to be bored by photos of them tomorrow 😂.

Today was a day of ups and downs. Our cat of nearly 15 had to go to the vet and we actually thought we might not be brining him home, but luckily the new Vet decided to do some bloods and gave him a once over and we still have him. He is probably going blind and he has a heart murmur, not to mention a kidney problem… she reckons he has got a bit more time in him yet…but considering when we got him at two weeks old (he had been abandoned) and hand reared him, we didn’t think he would make it through the night as he had been fed cows milk by the lady who found him, after he had been left for a fair old while. He was covered in crap and was a pooh brown colour, it was only when we bathed him that we realised that he was black and white…There were seven in the litter and he had outlasted them all, which considering he was the runt is pretty impressive.

6mm Samurai Finished

Tonight I got the mon put onto the sashimono and the tufts stuck on. I am really pleased with how they have come out. I might change the colour of the mon, but I will see how the white grows on me.

I might have to search through my tufts as I have about 15 left of these ones. Problem is I can’t remember where I got them or what they are called!

I made a start on the the halfling army by spraying them white, along with some orc chariots and a couple of ogres too. I will get some paint on them tomorrow. They might take a while as they are going to be in lots of bright colours as befits a halfling force.

I also got a small file onto the Battle valour samurai. I hadn’t noticed before but the mould lines are really bad on some of them. It was only when I sprayed them white that I noticed.

So it has been quite a productive day. I spent a lot of it in the big shed, sorting it out so that we can set it up more as a craft room. The resin will go out there. My wife has her office out there so I can’t put the resin printer in there. That will go into my bottom shed, once I sort it out!

Sengoku… Nearly There

Tonight I cracked on whilst watching Monsters Versus Aliens. I am now within spitting distance of finishing.

It is so funny. Yesterday I hated these and today with a bit of flesh colour, some silver and a lot of black then I actually quite like them again. My next thing is the sashimono design. To save time and effort it will either be a straight line or a circle in the middle. I am probably going to go with white. Originally I was going to go with Gold, but I have now decided against it. The four mounted banners will have four similar designs, a bit like I did with the Sons of Set.

My resin has come, my UV light has come, my resin funnel has come, the one thing missing is the actual printer.

I was asked to show some WIP of the resin pouring that the kids and I did yesterday. So here we go..

On the left my son’s paper weight, then my eldest’s shot glass out of the mould and on the right one still in the mould.

Tomorrow is the last day of school in Shetland. So I will be running around like a bit of a loon to get stuff ready so that I won’t have to go in next week.

I am hoping that I can get these Samurai finished and based tomorrow evening.
