Snow, Printers and Paint

Well the expected snow and wind came and today proved to be a bad day to be a bus driver…

70mph winds and snow, never a good mix. I had t go into town to help my mother in law fix her sink and nearly had the 4WD going sideways too.

I got my first ruined building printed, this came from the Frost Kickstarter by Iain Lovecraft…

I was going to print some other things but sadly, the printer decided it was too cold. The above building comes in three bits, ground, first floor and roof. I am going to add a floor into the second level to allow for miniature placement. The whole thing took 31 hours to print. But as you can see – it is quite large.

I also managed to get some painting done this evening, not a huge amount, but there was Progress happening…

I actually tried to photograph four miniatures here!

I went back over the tentacles and spines on the Nurgle lot with white as well as giving them a layer of Contrast Skeleton bone.

I also spent some time today messing around with the old 3D Builder as well as seeing what the heck I actually had regarding the 3D Printers.

I Got Motivated

So after, going on about how I couldn’t be bothered to do anything this evening I started watching one of the resident Evil films and needed up getting this far with this chappy…

I will redo him at 85% some time but for now he is something to paint. talking of which, I have eventually called it over on my first pot of my Contrast Black Templar. It has eventually run out to be more truthful, or is more like tar than Contrast paint. I will no doubt need to replace some of my more used ones soon enough too…. oh yeah, so much for the early night plan!

Feeling Meh…and Cold!

I am feeling a bit under the weather today and have struggled to get motivated to do anything. I did however manage to prize some miniatures off the printer…

85%, 90%, 92% and 100%… I put them next to Percy and as Mikko said, 85% is the one I went with…

As expected the weather turned, 60mph winds and snow. This morning it was 8 degrees, this evening it is – something and feels like -15 because of the wind. This is one of the reasons I think that caused my prints to fail…

The mage is missing an arm and the wardancer is missing a leg. The Paladin second from left is missing a foot, but that was my cock up, luckily I realised and had to hunt though the waste bin to find it! Next to her is a witch hunter.

Once the temperature rises then I will redo the failed two. I also managed to do some crows from my LOTR Patreon…

Hopefully I will feel a bit more motivated tomorrow… an early night should help… and finally, my son has been busy again… tonight’s tipple was butterbeer from the Harry Potter Universe…

Size Matters..

Yes it really does. 1.5mm flex shouldn’t be used when 2.5mm is the standard and you cannot mix and match miniatures when they are a different size.

On the electric front, everything now seems to be working fine, thanks for all of the positive vibes yesterday. I did however lose the front plate that has the built in WiFi extender…luckily that is now found, so I will get it fitted tomorrow. We are meant to be getting snow and 50mph winds…oh yipppeee!

I printed off the chappy (I couldn’t be bothered to try and work out how to spell the name of the German mercenary with the big sword) and the mage.. they came out really well…

I decided to put the bloke next to my original RPG Character, Sir Percival Fanhard… He is definitely a tall chap

So this evening I took the same file and scaled it at 80%, 90 and then 95%. I will find out tomorrow if there is a match…

I managed to do a smidge of painting too…

A Day for the Queen

In my first teaching job, I had a lovely deputy head teacher called Anne Standish. She worked with the little ones and used to have a great saying… if it was a crap day she would give it to the queen. So Your Majesty, please accept this day just for you.

So you are no doubt agog to find out why… today I decided to get some more done in The conservatory… I wanted to get the lighting electrics in, before getting the ceiling put on. I had to drop my eldest into Lerwick so picked up the lighting cable I needed. I got home and set about adding the lighting to the mains power … it was then that the swearing started. I realised that my 1.5mm lighting cable was the same size… as… the… 2.5mm cable in situ. Yes.. knob Head hear had put the wrong cable in. Luckily the sockets that were in there had low power devices on them. It did however mean that I had to remove one wall that I put in.

I then realised that I needed 2.5mm cable as I had a full reel of 1.5 mm. The reel of 2.5 was totally gone. So back to Lerwick I went…So my 20 minute job took a lot of the day. I then realised that I had set the printer going and then turned off the power Two and a half hours into a four hour print…. I swore some more!

On the upside, I got some miniatures printed eventually… they had something bizarre going on….

Now this is a first… I think what happened is that I set the cleaner on cure instead of clean. Being inserted in a bath of Isopropyl and then cured probably caused the problems.

Here the three of them are (minus their hands)… they are printing now.

These are really big miniatures. I had hoped I could squeeze them in with some of my GW Mordheim miniatures, but they are too big. My based leader only comes up to their shoulder. I might play around with the scale of them… to put it into context, here is one of them next to my Chaos Marine…

Speaking of Chaos… I made a start on the three I am giving to my mate…

So now that I have my printers up and running again then I thought this Meme was quite appropriate!

Painting Success

So yesterday, I said that today I was going to paint something, in fact anything… well I kept to my word and actually did a fair bit. First off I sprayed various things…

Now there were some spaying annoyances to deal with, first off my grey primer turned out to be an etch primer… luckily I realised as it had a different nozzle. I gave it a try on the small ‘goat shed’ to see if it would work. Luckily I had other cans of the basic grey so the rest got done in that. Then I moved on to spaying things white. I warmed up the can, I shook the blazes out of it and it came out like a watered down version. If you look at the right hand photo above you can see what I mean on the green and orange miniatures. It eventually came good on the grey. Now it might just be a bad batch or the coloured plastic needed going over with a different colour first. I sprayed the top of the mini tower white and it seemed to work fine. I will have another play with things tomorrow.

I also managed to get these three just about finished…

I need to sort out the bases, but apart from that they are done. I really enjoyed painting them to be honest.

I also got a bit more done on the Genestealer cultists as well as some other bits and bobs, mainly the original scouts…

I also got the hole in the roof finished too, so hopefully the leak of leakyness has buggered off, only time and heavy rain will tell.

Tomorrow I have the tyres to change on the car, but I am also hoping to get a start on the lighting and then ceiling insulation.

Printing Success

Huzzah, the roof came out fine, well apart from a couple of gaps it is fine. However putting it on a raft with supports inside it made my job a nightmare… luckily I only stabbed my self only once.

My second Kickstarter core bundle came through too. I had already started on the ‘crow’ tower. But me being me didn’t do it for 28mm as designed, instead I dropped it down to something that would suit my 6 or 10mm Armies…

Today I have been doing more work in the conservatory, or rather on the conservatory. If you remember we put a skylight in it and it has been nothing but trouble, so today I spat the dummy and removed it… as you can imagine this left a ruddy great hole in the roof. So with a bit of help from the family we got some wood cut and filled in the gaps. It had been a fine day although a bit on the chilly side. So I had just glued everything in place and the heavens opened with some of the worst sleet I have seen in a good while. Needless to say I hadn’t sealed everything yet, so we now have a very wet floor. I managed to get some plastic over things, but it was a bit late. I was so wet I put my trousers straight into the tumble drier to get them useable again quickly.

Tomorrow I carry on and get the roofing felt on and get that all sealed too. Busy, busy, busy!

Tomorrow I intend to try and paint something… anything in fact. I am going to print out some of the militia too from the Lovecraft Kickstarter.

A Day of Printing Ups and Downs

Well if you remember, yesterday I was busy printing my 6mm temple. I got the base and walls done…

I was immensely pleased with the result, so today I set about printing the roof. Now because the corners come in two parts, I decided to save time (bad idea) and print them like they come in the package. This is vertically on the end. Now I was a bit concerned that there wouldn’t be much contact between the edge of the roof and the build plate so I added a raft to help out. This adds a fair old bit of time to the print, but it does generally help… except today. I came in at the four and a half hour mark to find this shit storm happening…

I swore…lots!

I haven’t got a clue what the heck happened, but it would seem one of them has come adrift and then things have snowballed from there. So this evening I built everything in 3D builder, and have placed it as it would appear on the building. I have once again added a raft, but have also added supports too. Just in case… it is now a 10 hour plus print, b7t hopefully it will be okay.

Now onto the printing success… I backed a Kickstarter called the Frost. This is by a very talented artist called Duncan Lovecraft. He does some amazing stuff… As part of the Kickstarter he had a grab bag of goodies so for the hell of it I printed a couple of dwarves, these are lovely….

One is the bog standard adventurer dwarf and the other is a Landsknecht dwarf… I just thought he looked funky. This Kickstarter attracted my attention as I fancied playing Mordheim again and Lo and behold it has a pile of suitable miniatures, as well as some great terrain, that will also work for Frostgrave.

Building, Printing and Painting

Cor blimey, I have been busy today, shopping, building, sawing, Printing, Painting and making dinner to name but a few.

Well as you know I do like my 6mm Samurai and 3DAlien World’s has produced a very nice temple building. It came out today so I just had to get it. In 28mm it would be huge, in fact the Ender would only take one base bit at a time, luckily I was going 6mm. So I built bits in 3D Builder first and then reduced them down to 24% the base is printing right now, but the walls came off really nicely…

Unfortunately I don’t think I am going to be able to pre build the roof, but I will most definitely give it a go.

I also got the Trewell Common buildings finished too..

Now you may notice that the photo was taken on a different surface… this is because I now have a dedicated painting place I; the lounge…

This pretty much can store most of my paints miniatures and other bits and pieces. I tried it out this evening and did some more on the Cultists…

I also did some work on the conservatory. We are putting down decking as a different kind of flooring and to cut a long story short…short being quite appropriate here….

I swore….lots!

80cm short! It comes in 4.8m lengths… hopefully there will be a knackered piece that I can get cheap… wish me luck!

Helmets and Hovels

Well my printer has just passed its 25th hour straight. Another five and it should be finished. I took a couple of photos, there were going to be four barrels, but two popped off the build plate early on and one of these dropped off right at the end of printing. For some reason the little building which is 40% it’s original size (my goat shed) has warped on one corner…

I also decided to try something a bit more complex this evening and gave a helmet a go… it certainly leaves a lot to be desired, but hey you have to start somewhere.

I need to practice vertical cuts and make sure that I spread the contact adhesive out more evenly, but it is mad of some sheets of EVA that I have had for at least three years, so no harm done. I am still amazed that this came from a flat sheet of foam. The bit on the top is going to be a top ridge with built in nasal guard. I will make cheek pieces and a neck guard too.

On a totally different subject, this is my 601st post in a row. Probably 500 more than there should have been I hear you cry! However, I have had 25000 views and 8018 visitors. Which is pretty awesome. So a big thank you to everyone who pops in to look and leaves a comment too.
