Mongol Horses II

Some more work on these…

These have had the wash on, not that you can tell ☹️

I will highlight them tomorrow

I also got manes and tails done. Mostly grey or black to be honest.

I also started on the tunics and breeches. I started with red …. as is a bit obvious based on the photo!

I will get some blue and a sand colour onto the clothing tomorrow, a smattering of green and grey then they will be all finished…..I wish.

I am enjoying doing these though. I am trying to remember to make them bright so that they stand out.

I did find an unusual miniature in amongst the rest

His tunic is longer than the rest…. just checked on the Pendraken website… evidently he is Subedai… being a bit incognito as I know that I didn’t order the commander pack… I better check, as I might have done. If so Genghis and Jebei have also gone undercover too!

Tonight’s painting was brought to you by ‘Kingdom of Heaven’

I don’t have a film with Mongols in it, so this had to suffice. I haven’t seen it for ages and forgot how much I liked it

Mongol Horses

I managed to get the horses started…

I took the undercoat and gave it a heavy dry brush of leather brown.

Once this was dry I randomly painted various colours onto the horses. These are the base colours. I will give them a wash once dry and then highlight them. Manes and tails after that.

When the horses are done I will move onto the riders.

I will have a look at some pictures of mongol horsemen to see what colours to do the clothing.

Mongol Cavalry

I managed a bit on the light cavalry today.

They have progressed from the bare metal.

Through to the sand onto the bases. The sand has been sealed with watered down PVA.

I stood them on the radiator to speed up the drying time.

The whole miniature was brush undercoated with Foundry Bay brown A.

The paint is still wet so it looks I have missed some of the undercoat . Well at least I hope I haven’t missed an6! I will hopefully get a heavy brown dry brush onto them tomorrow, not to mention covering up any of the bases that are showing any metal.

Shetland Games Day

Thule Gamers ran our annual mini convention today

This was my participation table using the gladiator games.

I didn’t stop all, day. At one point I had to ask people to give me ten minutes to eat my chips with cheese. They were already cold but I was really hungry!

The rules worked a treat and the game itself seemed to be popular, well people kept coming back to have another go more than once.

Some of the other games were as follows:

Star Wars – my kids spent all day playing this.

A Hordes of the Things Sci Fi battle on Mars, a bit of a participation game too.

A board game or two, not sure what this one was, it was in a massive box though.I nicked this photo from my mate as I didn’t really get the chance to get about once things kicked off.

There was a D&D table, no-one joined in, but I think it was more to ask questions than to take part. Another table was playing Magic the Gathering.

Finally a demonstration game in 28mm ‘Full Metal Jacket-the game’. Well maybe not but it was Vietnam.

It was the busiest one to date so a definite success. I am now going to have a think about what to do next year. I don’t know why I bother, I generally have a plan all year and then change my mind in the last couple of months. As an example: I was going to run Gaslands, but decided against it about six weeks ago.

My plan was to get some painting done tonight, but to be honest I am too knackered.

Back to painting tomorrow I think…

Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant

The time has come for my arena to return.

The summer sun beat down on the young man standing alone on the sand. He glanced about as the odd murmured conversation reached his ears. Sweat stung his eyes and he slid his hands down the rough material of his tunic. Without taking his eyes of the large doors he knelt down and rubbed his hands in the sand to help get a better grip on the spear that lay by his side.

From the other side of the doors angry shouts burst out. There was the clanking of chains on metal then silence. Germanicus retrieved his weapon and stood tall, ready to face whatever came through the forbidding portal.

As the doors swung open on their chains the crowd roared their approval as the tawny beast slunk into the arena.

This was no bear, Germanicus had hunted bears with dog and spear in his homeland, but this was a cat! Large and lithe with an agile grace that made him pause.

The cat trotted towards him growling at the back of its throat.

Throwing caution to the wind Germanicus charged, hoping to pierce the heart or lungs, but although his aim was true, the beast leapt sideways and his killing blow, drew blood but little more.

The beast struck back, but perhaps the noise of the crowd or the sudden pain in its shoulder caused it to mistime the strike. Germanicus easily blocked the swipe of the claws.

Germanicus lunged again, but this time the cat expected it an swatted aside the spear point.

Claws raked the spear shaft as Germanicus protected himself from the enraged creature. Who, with some form of detached interest, noted the anger in those yellow-brown eyes. He also spotted the burns where heated iron had been pressed against its skin.

Another lunge and another blocked attack. The crowed heckled and screamed their anger, they had come to see blood and so far very little had been spilled.

Blood appeared soon enough, Germanicus misjudged the attack and his thigh and chest seemed to open up before his eyes.

Stumbling slightly and gripping his spear more tightly, he lunged again, the pain seemed distant. As did the roar of the crowds.

The beast swatted aside his feeble blow with ease. As the great paws struck again and again Germanicus collapsed to the blood soaked sand. As his vision dimmed he realised that he would never again see the rain soaked hills of his beloved homelands.

As the lion dragged the still warm body across the arena men with whips and red hot iron ran forward. They had a timetable to keep to. Any infringement would mean the Fat tub of grease sitting on the dais with his smug smile would have them in front of the crowds like poor Germanicus. The best they could do now was give the poor lad’s remains a proper burial.

As it is our local Games day/convention tomorrow I was asked to bring the Gladiator game again. It is a nice easy system.

This lion was pretty tough, the one liked by the crowds as it became a skilled man killer. Normally the lions in the games are NPC’s and actually don’t have any defence dice. I thought I would see what would happen when they do.

For the first couple of turns the Bestiarius had it pretty much all his own way, and then in three turn the tables were turned and down he went.

The thing about a lion is that it doesn’t really care if someone waves their thumb up or down.

The rules and some of the miniatures are from EM4. The Lions are Foundry and the rest of the gladiators are Westwind ones, to my knowledge no longer available in the uk.

I have enough ‘special’ cards to have four people playing at once.

Each player has a gladiator miniature and associated card

Marcus has 8 hit points, moves 5 and throws 2 standard dice and a boosted dice.

His specials are:

Savage attack

2x feint

2x Doughty defence

2x Dodge

All gladiators get seven specials plus a blank special to avoid your opponent having an advantage. The specials are crossed off the card once used. The blank card can be used as often as required.

We will see how tomorrow goes and feed back tomorrow evening.

10 mm Knights

These were the most complicated 10mm so far

I decided on a small contingent of one of the Holy orders. Comprising knights, mounted sergeants, foot sergeants and crossbows.

Onto the non religious types

The sergeants have the same livery as the knights. So one knight may have a mounted sergeant and a couple of foot sergeants in the same colours.

The general in charge of operations.

The force is also supported by a small group of peasants armed with a random selection of agricultural tools.

It seemed like a really good idea to paint twenty seven different liveries across the knights, although it was tricky it really does give a pleasing and colourful force.

I decided to purchase the Mongols to fight this lot, which is why I went for the colours on the religious orders.

Apologies for some of the photos as they are a bit on the dark side.

10mm Undead

Now onto the undead…

Still in Aberdeen so more pictures of previously painted stuff.

A small force of scary stuff.

Vampire commanders, one of the three bat clouds, the other two are sitting in the 15mm early German box. This became a quasi fantasy force with both werewolves and giant bats.

Skeletons both cavalry and infantry with their own command. Ghosts in the background

Zombies with big scary skeletons and mummies in the background

I increase my undead force by including the beggar army to act as thralls

They have their own command (at the back)

They do have a mounted force

As well as a small force of missile troops.

As with the barbarians, these are based up for GW’s Warmaster. I intend to rebase the cavalry to a 30 x 40mm base giving me two bases worth.

Other things I found when I was having a mooch around in my boxes.

Samurai Apes, these are part finished and the following need even more work

I have a whole host of the blue ones at the same stage of painting. I may have to get them finished now that I have found them. The above is pretty much the full range apart from bow armed tiger riders. They really could do with some additions. Some form of peasants as well as some monks and ninja just to name a few.

Barbarian horde in 10mm

“Somebody wake up Hicks!”

He Gods the plane journey down to Aberdeen was like the drop-ship scene from Aliens! First time I have ever actually left my seat on take off. 😱

Anyway as I am away from home, I won’t be able to paint anything. So instead I photographed my barbarians from Pendraken.

I based these up for GW’s Warmaster rules which is why the cavalry etc are on 20x40mm bases long ways. My plan is to now rebase the cavalry troops to 30x40mm bases.

So what do we have in the horde?

A general mounted on a mammoth. I have around three others without the howdah. These are my heavy hitters, you don’t get many things heavier and hittier than an enraged pachyderm. The rest of these ended up in my Palaeolithic mammoth hunting box.

Bison riders next, these will become two units of three riders.

I wanted a wild feel to this force, so the next lot are my bison stampede troops… the warriors chase the spare bison towards the enemy lines!

There is also a pack of wolves that can be utilised too.

Some heroes and sub generals to lead the force

Some allied muscle in the form of some trolls

And not to mention some hairy chaps with big sticks. There are twelve bases of warriors armed with hand weapons and three bases of missile armed troops. My missing or imagined Caucasian Amazon’s added to this force!

Finally we have a giant eagle that is useful for various things.

There are another two knocking around somewhere else!

They are really hard hitting with some flexibility of troop types. Their relative lack of missile troops makes them vulnerable at long range, however their main protagonists are an undead/thrall force who thankfully don’t have many missile troops either, their ability to get back up again after you knock them down makes them a little more tricky to beat.

Amazon’s All Finished

I wanted these finished tonight and managed to do so.

Well when I say finished, I suddenly noticed all of the glaring errors in the photo above. If nothing else, the saddle on the sitting camel needs a wash and a highlight.

I was right about the bases being finished would help distinguish the figures, but I think I am going to repaint all of the spears etc something like a bone colour to give a better contrast.

The camels look like this:

And the infantry like this:

I really do think I need the lighter colour on the spears etc more for aesthetic’s than anything else. The other thing I need to paint is the bier that the queen is sitting on. I evidently totally forgot to paint it.

These certainly aren’t going to win any prizes but they are done in two evenings. So success on that front.

I had a look for my other Amazon’s and this is all I found!

I am totally perplexed as to where the rest have gone.

I am now beginning to wonder whether or not I imagined painting up an army, either that or I painted them up for somebody else.

Tomorrow I am off to Aberdeen on the first flight off Island, this means a wake up at 05.00… I am seriously not looking forward to that!

Amazon’s Finished….sort of

I wanted these completely finished tonight…

I failed 😢

The figures are all done, However the bases need finishing.

I decided to paint the bases brown, which has actually meant the figures have sort of become lost.

I reckon that once I get some flock on then it should brighten the bases up and show of the figures a bit better.

I decided on a red and white planked shield look, but to be honest I don’t know whether it is too much or not.

Tomorrow I will get the bases finished off. I just remembered how I did this method in the past. Get the sand onto the bases before painting…isn’t hindsight a great thing 🙄.
