My daughter has joined our gaming group and is playing a wood elf character in our One Ring campaign. Being a kind father that I am I purchased a miniature for her and am now painting it.
Still a very long way to go, but I am getting there slowly.
We did have a lot of fun on Hero Forge making up characters but at $10 for the download and $20 for a physical version we went for the cheaper option of £3.25 for a reaper bones mini.
So Sunday in the kitchen has taken place with the background chuntering of the Printer.
I got the first 14 tokens printed this afternoon. These took 2hours 48 minutes to complete.
These came out fine apart from the front four. These for some reason warped.
You can see the shadow caused by the warping on the photo above. I am not sure why they warped as the only one that isn’t a repeat is number 5. Therefore it is either an issue with bed adhesion (as in it’s not clean enough) or perhaps some issue with the way they were sliced.
I noticed as the first few levels went down that a few of them looked a bit weird – one edge was really thin and the other a bit thicker. I can’t actually remember how many of these weird ones there were, but I would like to have a guess at 4!
The next two sets of tokens were the square ones, these funnily enough came out totally flat. I did give the build plate a blast with isopropyl alcohol to clean it off just in case. These took 1 hour 51 minutes. The build plate wasn’t even cool before I set it off with the circular possession counters. These took a mere hour to complete.
Next on the SD card was actually a miniature. Now I played with the slicer profile a smidge. I moved the wall number from 2 to 3. This does seem to have smoothed things out a bit…
There is a definite difference between the new (Manflayer) on the left and the rogue on the right. There were other differences in the miniature profile from Fat Dragon, but I can’t remember what they were. The model above is pretty similar to the view in the slicing software. I don’t think the amount of detail will improve a huge amount. This is in no way a criticism as I might be proved wrong. The Manflayer took just under an hour and a half to complete.
I am now in the process (or the printer is) in doing a set of 10 event counters.
I will probably show these tomorrow. Once they are done I will get a group of four dread folk printed.
I will then be left with 4 cultists with separate arms, 1 night fiend and 20 boon counters then all of the components will be complete. I intend to get everything painted too.

The last ones done were the village last night and the fields today.
I don’t think I showed the keep and hill yesterday either. Now these weren’t quick prints. The keep and hill took 5 hours 30 minutes, the village tiles took slightly less at 5 hours 24 minutes and the four field tiles took 5 hours 48minutes. As for the cost for all 14 tiles. I weighed them to get the total weight. All 14 came in a 180 grams. Giving a total cost of £3.24. Now there has been 20+ hours worth of printing time. But still just over 3 quid isn’t too bad a price to pay. The other thing that dawned on me when I released the villages from the bed was that they would make ideal town (or villages) for 6 or 10mm wargames. I will see how they look when they are painted up.
So here are all 14 tiles together…
One thing I have noticed is that they don’t all fit together seamlessly. It could be slight imperfection on the edges or my z axis might be slightly out… but in reality it is out by a mm at most so not worth worrying about.
Part of me wants more rivers and roads or at least a curved tile…that way I can make more interesting maps 😉.
Tomorrow I will make a start on the tokens and the rest of the miniatures. If I do the miniatures I will try better settings on the slicer and see how it goes.
The printer was busy last night and this evening.
I printed the river and ruins tile last night and then the two forest tiles that just finished their 5 hour print. I have just set the hill and keep going now. They will hopefully be finished by tomorrow.
Once these are done I have four field tiles and a couple of village tiles and then that is them all done.
Again these were found on Thingiverse from Dutchmogul as part of the Curse of Mohr game.
Well tonight I printed up a couple of the game tiles from the curse of Moht game by Dutchmogul.
These even though very flat took 3 hours to print. I think it is probably caused by all of the tufts and individual cobblestones on the road.
I also painted up one of the characters from the game. He is nothing spectacular but does the job. In terms of detail think early Games Workshop plastics…to be fair I printed him with standard settings on the printer. I reckon I could get more detail if I tried.
The other think I printed was a leaking barrel. Not sure what it is leaking but I thought green was rather funky.
As for the game tiles I need 14 in total:
1 keep
1 hill
1 river
1 ruin
4 fields
2 forests (being printed now)
2 roads (printed)
2 villages.
There are the miniatures too.
4 cultists
4 dread fiend monster thingies
1 cleric
1 manflayer (printed… I think)
1 night fiend
1 dusk lord (printed)

I am calling these done apart from a bit of tidying up and then the bases finishing. I might give the faces a bit of a wash as they do look a bit pale.
It would have made my life easier if my fine detail brushes hadn’t given up the ghost.
I think they will look a lot better when they get the sand or flock or whatever I decide upon onto the bases.
Because the bases are so raised then I can’t really just paint the bases. Which is a bit of a pain as whatever I put on is going to look massive by comparison.
I eventually ordered 200 40x20mm bases so when they arrive I will blast on with the infantry. As I am on a bit of a roll with 10mm I might crack on with some more Mongols.
I also managed to get a bit of paint onto the Gigantoraptor, these dinosaurs also fall into the neglected miniatures category.
Still another 5 to go out of the neglected dinosaurs. A triceratops, a tyrannosaurus, a parasaurolophus, a stegosaurus and a hatzegopteryx (a massive flying reptile in case you didn’t know). The total bugger is that four of them have earlier ones already painted. It would be good if I could match them in.
For some reason, I decided to print an 18mm Viking ‘house’
To be honest it turned out a lot bigger than I expected. It will be okay for skirmish gaming, with individually based miniatures, but it is far too big for units of 18mm miniatures. Even then the doorway is huge behind the 18mm elf. I might reprint it at 50% size and see how it looks then. As it stands this took over 8 hours to complete.
The printer is standing cold and idle tonight. There is nothing on my micro SD cards that I want to print off and I can’t be bothered to download some things I do want and the slice them ready for printing. I will see about getting something sorted tomorrow.
As a total aside, I printed this for my wife the other day…
It is a copy of a 10th century Viking brooch found in Denmark.
Well when I say almost done I actually mean the first unit is almost done.
Just the skin and hair to do, along with tidying up and a bit more highlights. Not quite sure where the zoomed in image went, but this one will do. I have stopped hating these now, I still don’t like the barding but, it will have to do 😬
As I had the brown paint out for the bases I gave this chap his first undercoat. I say first as I intend to give him two to hide the printer lines. They can really be seen on the following photograph
To be fair though I reckon I could tweak the printer settings to eradicate these a bit more. This was a test print to see how it went. But I suppose to look at it another way it weighs 4 Grams and at 0.018p per gram then it cost pence… and when looked at from this distance…
The lines are a lot less noticeable. I can tell who he is and that he is armed with a bow. So to be honest I am not going to worry about it that much. I will try another print sometime in the future with the Fat Dragon miniature settings dialled into the printer.
Tomorrow I hope to finish off the cavalry. There will be a short hiatus with the infantry as my 40×20 bases need to arrive.
Totally stunned to realise that my little old blog here has passed the 2000 visitor mark last night.
I am honestly blown away and want to say thank you to everyone that has popped by either to have a look at what madness I am up to or to leave a comment. I really do appreciate it.
My blog started to motivate myself into getting back into painting minis or making terrain. the problem was that I had been dancing with the black dog a fair bit and the painting and crafting was my way of coping I suppose.
The blog was to self motivate. I wanted to add something every night and if I painted a mini or made a piece of terrain then I would feel like I had made an achievement. That was the plan, I never actually thought anyone would actually read it, so I was totally wrong there. As an offshoot of the blog I have been able to look back and realise how much I have managed to achieve since September 2017 (90% still need their bases finishing and a coat of varnish put on them). The other offshoot of it is I have joined a really positive community of like-minded people. I only wish my internet speed was faster so that I could look at the pictures more.
As for the dog, well he is out there somewhere chasing sticks, I can hear him barking every so often and he may come back, who knows but at least I have a big pile of sticks now for him to chase.
So thank you, everyone, for coming and visiting and following. I fully intend to keep going with the blog; so see where I can get to in another year.
I reckon the 3D printer might have to have its own page as I am printing something random almost every night (last night was an 18mm scale Viking house).
I did a bit of painting this evening…
I managed to get a fair bit done on these tonight, well in the amount of time I had. Still a lot of shading and highlighting to do but I need to do the weapons, flesh tones and hair. Then onto the bases.
The velociraptors got a quick bit of blue, again that needs shading, but the smaller dinosaurs are using up the spare paint on the palette.
Then onto the infantry all 125 of them 😱. That reminds me I must buy some 20x40mm bases.
