Greek Shields and Printer Woes

Tonight I got the transfers put, rather clumsily, onto the shield fronts… obviously I need a bit of practice…

I made a start on another set of four bases. I would have managed more, but I decided to get the new motherboard into the printer. It actually wasn’t too bad, apart from the fact they had used some strange red gunk to hold things in place. I made sure that I put things on the new board as soon as they came out of the old. I switched It on and voila… still didn’t work properly. It did exactly the same as before, up and down works fine, just not printing. I even left it for a while in ‘print mode’ to see if the print place would descend. It didn’t, but the uv lights certainly came on. I have contacted Anycubic again to see if they have any further ideas.

I tried moving the caravan today and Lo and behold the bloody brakes are locked on… I actually didn’t swear too much. We had left the handbrake off, but when the gales arrived then we put it on… and evidently forgot! My job tomorrow is to get the thing jacked up and get the wheels off and get the brake drum smacked with a hammer until the wheels turn again.

A Crap Old Day

It truly has been a bit of a crap day, the loss of Smudge has been tempered a bit by the knowledge that we will be getting a kitten in a couple of months.

The vet was lovely, she allowed us in the room with him when he went, she wasn’t supposed to, due to Covid restrictions, but it really did help us.

We have had him since 2005. We hand reared him and half the litter from about a week old. He was the runt if the litter and the vet warned us that he might not see out the night. Ironically he is the last survivor of the litter. When they came to us they were dirty grey wriggling things. They had been fed cows milk and kept in newspaper, so they got a bath in an ice cream tub. He is called smudge as we couldn’t get the muck off his nose, then we realised he was actually black and white.

We lost the first of his litter at six weeks and tabby at 9 years… he was called tabby as he was the tabby kitten that we weren’t keeping…🙄.

He would have been sixteen this October, my wife was heavily pregnant when we got them, she reckoned that as she couldn’t sleep then she might as well feed kittens overnight.

So here he is the daft old softy…

Spot the Difference

So this evening I got everything to the point of getting the transfers onto the shields then I read the instructions!

After spending an age painting bronze shields, I then had to repaint them white. You can see why on the right hand shield above.

I will get the new ones covered tomorrow. These transfers aren’t like I am used to, they have a sticky front that you apply to the shield then you wet the backing paper and remove it. I reckon I will need a bit of practice as the backing paper hides the shield.

More Work on the Greeks

So this evening I managed to get somewhere with the first four bases of heavies…

Nowhere near finished, but definitely a lot less white on them than yesterday… there is a great deal of bronze on these, as one might expect. Hopefully the shield transfers will brighten the front ends up a bit.

I got a parcel today, my new motherboard has arrived…

I am a bit nervous putting it in, as the printer is still under warranty… okay to be fair we are sitting at 10 months since I had it, so the warranty is close to the end, but this is new tech too and, although I have built a pc years ago, I am just a bit twitchy that I will balls it up.

I decided not to do it this evening as I wanted something to distract me tomorrow, unfortunately my old cat, who we hand raised from two weeks is having to go to the vets, and I am thinking that it will be a one way journey for him. He is now 16 years old and his mental faculties are really starting to go, he will start shouting for us when he has lost us, problem is we are in the room with him. He will then chase me to feed him, after I have just fed him. He is starting to poop wherever he is, often a couple of feet away from the litter tray, we have so many now because he was doing it in every room. He attacked the dog yesterday for no apparent reason… as. A vet friend said, better a day to early than a day too late. I know it is for the best, but my kids are going to be devastated. I really do think we have run out of straws to clutch at.

It’s All (Still) Greek to Me

I didn’t get a huge amount done on the Greeks tonight, but I did re fix about half a dozen back onto their bases and then make a start on the heavies…

I think I am going to do them in groups of four bases at a time so that it doesn’t feel like an uphill task… probably will anyway 🥴

My order from Geek Gaming arrived today and I want a bit of advice as to what basing material to use…

These are The Mediterranean base ready and the Arid base ready. I really like the Mediterranean one as it is brighter, but in reality it would probably look more like the one on the right… my other option is the paint the base brown and put patches of foam flock on as I have done with other ones…

Okay, these are 10mm but you can see the idea…

I also got the helmet sprayed with a filler spray and then a black undercoat, I will see about getting it painted this weekend.

Greeks and the Helmet

Tonight I got the old helmet outside and put a sanding disk on and got rid of the weird welded look, problem was the gaps were still there in some places which was a right pain… so anyway after a bit of head scratching and, to be frank, swearing. I came up with a plan to try and cover it with PVA…

Hopefully it will cover the cracks… I also smoothed out the rough foam and rounded out bits to make them more natural looking… it really helped with the eye sockets.

I also managed to get the light Infantry just about finished…

Of course I do have my trusty reference material handy 😂 I actually bought this years ago as I was doing some stuff in Greeks in a school and wanted some useful snippets of information.

Am I safe to be Let Online?

So today in my lunch break I got a notification to say that Kickstarter needed something… so I duly went online, did what I needed to do and then noticed something….

I resisted for all of about 30 seconds! Seriously I should leave my iPad at home. The one I jumped on came with some artillery and an add on, which pretty much worked out being free.

But enough about my week willed nature, I also managed to get some paint on my Greeks…

Still a fair old bit to do, but definitely getting there… and finally I decided to open the foam clay and add some to the helmet…on the upside, there aren’t any cracks… on the downside it looks like some apprentice welder has been allowed to practice on it…

Once it has dried, I should be able to set upon it with the sander and get the bits smoothed off.

Printing Presents and a Trip to the Beach

Well the printer has kindly let me print eight of the ten miniatures. I need to do the Marshall and the sergeant. I also bought the set that means I can choose what they are armed with. There will be a second squad armed with shields and hand weapons and then a heavy weapon squad too. So this is where we are at now…

The one on the right had a support failure… his arm is a little on the thin side. I will reprint him and probably use this one as a test model to get an idea on colours for them. The two I really like are the one reloading and the one with his finger to his headset, obviously calling for backup.

While I was looking for something to put on the 15mm pack mule I found this chap instead… he is one of my original Necromunda gangers. Obviously he is a little worse for wear now having been bounced around in a box for the last …goodness knows how long. I do reckon he deserves a repaint!

Anyway, as I mentioned yesterday, we went to the beach on Sunday afternoon. I did a post on my other (sadly neglected) blog Here . I have got a few more ideas in the back of my head on what to do on there next… I just need to find time to do the research first.

Oh there are some more baggage carriers too, with their adopted mule, that I have had for about 20 years. I stole one of the minis to go with the cart, the mule filled his space on the base… here is the cart and funky nude musicians.

Ancient Greek Donkey Wallopers

Today was a busy one, I added three double sockets to my Wife’s office. She had been working with a long extension, so it really needed doing. I got into a rage only a couple of times, First was when the previous owner had stripped a screw on the socket face and I couldn’t get it out, second was when the trunking decided it wasn’t going to allow me to get the front back off, any other time you look at it and it falls off, but not when I wanted to.

Even with my tribulations, I managed to get things painted tonight…
