Fey Finished…Onto the Beastmen

So I eventually got these finished… I have really enjoyed doing them and am pleased with how they look.

They are, with the exception of the metallics, all done in Contrast paint (apart from Army Painter dark wash on the hair). The contrast paint was added over a cheap white car primer (well £4 a can). One day I might splash out and see what the ‘proper’ undercoat colour looks like, but I doubt it. I would rather spend my money on toys and not undercoat 😉.

I could go over bits and do highlights, but haven’t worked out how with this paint yet.

As these were finished, I made a start on the Beasties…

I got all six built, these went together easier than the Fey. So easy in fact that I had to superglue one of the heads on as I reckon I would have lost the thing eventually.

So once built, I warmed up my spray can in warm water and then gave them a blast.

I will have to have a think about the colours, they will be a lot less bright than the fey, I would imagine green and gold would not feature heavily in their wardrobe choice.

Regarding colours, if you had asked me I would have said I had painted these with a very limited palette….

It was this many!

Guilliman flesh

Aggaros Dunes

Flesh Tearer red

Black Templar

Snakebite leather

Skeleton horde

Plaguebearer flesh

Gryph Charger grey

Militarium green

Iyanden Yellow

Gryph hound orange

Ork flesh

Gore Grunta fur

Wyldwood

Blood angels red

I forgot to show warp lightning, this was used on the gems in the belly of each of them

I also didn’t bother showing the paints I repainted a different colour.

This is not all of the Contrast paints I have, but for the beasties I will probably have to mix some of the colours rather than purchase any more.

I have decided to leave the fey bases as is for the time being as they are beginning to grow on me.

Fey… So Close

I nearly got these finished tonight, needed to wait for things to dry so I should manage to get them completed tomorrow.

In all honesty, all I really need to do now is to get the centre of the flowers done and the. That is about it, apart from making sure I haven’t missed anything.

I decided on yellow eyes without a pupil. There was a lot of Doreen on each mini, and I wanted something a little bit different. I can’t tell whether it is visible or not in the photo. I used the same colour as the flowers.

I am not sure what to do with the base rim, I will have to decide whether I leave it with the mottled look or whether to paint it black or dark brown.

Tomorrow I will finish these off then get the other set built too.

Painting the Fey… Almost There

I did some more work on these tonight…

Metalwork is pretty much done, bases started too. I am going to repaint the quiver as I did it silver and it looks totally naff. I also did a couple of the flowers on the bases dark blue and to be honest they don’t look right at all. I will have a go at red or orange and see what they look like then.

One thing I must do is sort out their eyes, I am thinking green, no visible pupils, just greenish eyes that would befit some kind if fey creature. I will have to have a think and see where I get with my perusing.

I spent a bit more money today!

I managed to get it cheap on a Facebook selling group, I have been after it for a while, so here is hoping that I like it. If not the miniatures can be used in my RPG and the adventures likewise.

Back to teaching tomorrow after half term and then a couple of training days.

Painting the Fey IV

So tonight I actually got some more done… not huge amounts, but an extra layer of gold on the parts that had a layer already and some bits and bobs on them all.

I also added all of the bits back onto the models. Tomorrow I will get on with the ironwork and silver too.

Apart from the Gold and a dark wash from Army Painter, these have all been done with just Contrast paint. I really liked the paint with the smaller scale stuff, but I am pleasantly surprised with how the 28’s are coming on. Once these are done I will then need to do the beast men.

Look, Look…I painted something

So after my woeful last post regarding a lack of energy to paint anything, I got a second wind and got the gold paint out…

Gold is really difficult to photograph, I thought I had missed loads only to realise it was a reflection.

Still bucketloads to paint but a teeny bit of progress is progress.

I also returned home to find my new rules a bit wet. I can only blame myself, I left them lying and I left the undrunk cup of tea next to them. Obviously someone bumped something and said tea went splosh!

They are getting the toilet paper drying method…. here is hoping the TP doesn’t stick to the pages!

Fey… Further Work

I decided to push on with these tonight…

Still loads to do but definitely getting there. My biggest problem was that bits that needed painting couldn’t be because of things like the centaur armour and on of the sword arms of another. I decided to get these off…

One side came off fine, but the other snapped off 🤬. On the up side the beastmen don’t seem to have anything similar to get in the way.I moved away totally from the box art, for a Start bright orange hair just doesn’t say fey to me, it always make me think of dwarf slayers. I darkened down the hair with some Army Painter dark wash. I am a lot happier with this than just the Contrast Black yesterday.

Hopefully I will be able to get some more done tomorrow evening as life is more than likely going to get in the way as I have my eldest of to a friends house, I will be off visiting my mate and all sorts of shenanigans like that.

Fey…Making a Start

So I decided to move away from tanks, goblins and samurai and give the new purchase a paint.

As per normal, I am experimenting with the contrast paint. I painted the flesh tones and made a start on the centaur body too. The Black isn’t exactly what I call black. It is what I would call grey, but over a white undercoat, it is probably going to come out grey.

All of the fey have some paint on them now, I will carry on tomorrow.

I will give the hair another blast if the black and see if that makes it closer to black. The lower bodies of the three on foot (or should that be hoof) will have similar colours to the centaur.

Whoops, This happened!

There I was today minding my own business, killing time before popping in to see my mate and this happened…

This is one of the games played by a few people at the Sunday Club, which is Shetland Wargames club, the original Shetland club is called Thule Gamers. Anyway I digress.

This box was packed to the top with stuff…

There are eleven miniatures. One set, the dark colour, are a Beastman faction and the other, the green sprue, are a fey Force, part of a wild hunt type force.

The game needs special dice supplied as well as various cards, both miniature and also objective, ploy and upgrade. There are 102 cards, not to mention a whole host of tokens.

The figures themselves are lovely…

These are snap together and don’t require glue, we shall see how that pans out! If I had one criticism of these is that a couple of them are balanced on. Single point of contact. The centaur in the background, although in a superbly dynamic pose, is poised on its front hoof. The plastic itself feels a wee bit softer than some of the older plastics, but possibly it is because I am more used to Perry’s plastic miniatures and haven’t had a good look at the GW stuff in a good while.

Regarding GW, although never a total fan boy, I did have a fair bit of their stuff, then, as everybody knows, they went a bit weird and started doing weird shit regarding pricing and the like, this turned me off them to be honest. This is my first real foray back into the company (apart from their paint – which frankly dries up as soon as you open the pots). So fair play to them this box is a full game, yes you can buy lots of bits and bobs for it, but it is a game with both sides.

Still not super cheap, at £45, but there again not silly expensive. The amount of figures within is not daunting…eleven in total. The other thing GW has is their TV channel where they show you how to build the forces and also paint one of each type up.

I have sprayed the fey with white earlier and I will have a go at painting one tomorrow.

Nasty Orkses all Finished

Tonight I decided to get these done and out of the way.

They need some kind of basing material on them but the proof if colour concept seems to work and I am happy with them. Once I get the Samurai done, I will get some more if these.

Apologies for the naff photo.

Popped in to see my mate today and he seemed a bit better than yesterday, still struggling with vocabulary, but looking better in himself.. other good news.. my wife got a tax rebate as she had paid too much plus, the insurance came back with an acceptable value for the wrecked car…phew!

Scalians… Temple of the Moon

After 10 hours (I think… totally forgot to check before switching off the printer) I have got my temple finished and it is, in my mind, absolutely superb.

Once again the Black PLA is helping no-one see the detail.

The piece comes from here I-Lovecraft. The stuff on there is lovely, if you have a 3D printer check it out. There are Fantasy, Meso American, Roman and Asian buildings and accessories. My favourite out is Bridgeton – it’s a modular bridge with houses built onto it. Something I think I will save up for.

Anyway back to the Temple I printed.

It comes in 5 main pieces (plus a brazier) there are four floor pieces.

These in turn hold up the Jaguar head.

Based on the hole in this, my bed needs levelling again. I will have to have a think as to whether I want these pieces overgrown and disused or have them full colour. If so it looks like Disney’s El Dorado will be coming out again as I really like the colours of the city.

So what do I think of this piece, firstly I haven’t done it justice on my printer. First off I didn’t use the hi resolution version that was available in the download, secondly I set my printer to a middling quality, I could have set it higher, but with that comes a longer print time 10 hours seemed long enough and I am impatient. I meant to get up early this morning and totally failed to do so! I only set the printer going at 11.00 am so I wanted it before I went to bed. Yesterday I was up to near as damn 2.00 am waiting for the pyramid to print. I think they are pretty awesome. Both are €12.50 in the online shop, but I got mine in the humble bundle so came in at a fraction of the cost. The thousand dollar question is would I buy them full price. Probably yes, depending on finances at the time. The MDF ones shown above were a whole lot cheaper, but and it’s a big but… these are a a whole lot more detailed and I can scale them up or down, not to mention print out two dozen if I wanted to. The temple is pretty much a single centre piece (but the separate heads are really useful to add as Scatter). I would still go for it as I couldn’t get anything as nice in resin or plastic for the same price. There was a nice resin temple for fish tanks in my local pet shop. It was nice, overgrown etc but it was £25 so even mooching about for other things still works out more expensive.

Once I get better at the 3D modelling, these could be distressed and damaged prior to printing which means even more things that can be done for the price.

So all in all, definitely worth the money. Something near to 16 hours print time, but still way faster than anything I could get delivered from the mainland.

So here they both are with a base of Scalians for Scale.

I dropped both of these to 60%. I might do another pyramid but print it full size. I reckon that would be a bit impressive on the table.

My next conundrum is how to base them, if at all. Temples like these would be part of a larger complex. A table of pyramids and temples would be cool, but it would be an absolute nightmare to try and store safely.

I could go for something like my HOTT stronghold here Temple Completed I did this on a smaller courtyard… like I say something to ponder. Tomorrow I intend to finish of painting the Scalians, print off some more bits and bobs – including some 25% sized jaguar heads to make some form of pathway to the temple and then make a start on my Tin Soldier Aztecs.
