3D Printer Test Print

3D printer Shenanigans took place yesterday. I bravely hit print only to find the bed was at the wrong height. My bed was perfectly level, but only 3mm too low. This was easily sorted by dialling it up to the right height.

Drum roll please…….

Tadaaaaa

A dog!

He stands about 7 cm tall. The print took just short of 5 hours. He only weighs weighs 36 grams so not much PLA filament has been used from the kilogram spool.

I downloaded a pile of upgrades from Thingiverse (thanks Azazel) to upgrade the printer a bit, mainly fan covers and filament guides Cura has downloaded and I am giving the guides a go. These will take an hour and 36 minutes and will use 16 grams of filament.

I really have to fight the urge to go an watch it zip backwards and forwards. I suppose once the novelty wears off then I will be less likely to stand and watch it.

My youngest daughter has snaffled the dog and has ordered that I make her a kitten to match the dog. My wife is after stitch markers and sock ruler for her knitting.

As a total and bizarre aside I evidently sat bolt upright in bed last night and said ding a ling a ding a ling then went back to sleep. I have no recollection of this whatsoever. It really does make me wonder what I was dreaming!

Undead Engineers… All Done

I managed to finish these off tonight…

They painted up really well, the only one I had a bit of a problem with was the one in the bearskin with the axe musket. I just couldn’t work out whether his features were spooky or shot.

The other one with the musket is not actually from the engineers set, he is from the original Deadloque set. He was lying around in a box with a few armed with pitchforks he was volunteered into the engineers on a whim!

I reckon I have time before the end of the month to get one or two more minis painted.

I will start with this one and see how far I get with him.

The tally this month is nineteen finished miniatures. Seventeen from Alternative Armies, one hobbit and half a plastic zombie from GW.

I have just had a thought… does the cavalry mini count as one or two???

3D Printing… making a start!

It has taken me a day and a half to pluck up the courage to make a start on assembling the printer. I got to the point where I had convinced myself I was going to break the thing getting it out of the box. Strangely enough I didn’t… but I did lose the micro SD card reader, only to find it was attached to a separate bit, therefore I didn’t get as far as a test print.

The pile of bits…

These somehow turned into this!

If you look closely just to the left of the centre at table level you can see the Slot for the card, not on the right anywhere near the screen where I thought it would be.

Anyway it is up and working to the point of nothing has gone bang or fizzzz.

Tomorrow I shall attempt to add the PLA!

I did manage to get a bit of painting done this evening. Mainly highlights, still the red to go at the very least.

I also reckon I am going to have to do something with the Dwarf’s hands, I painted them as yucky skin, but they look weird so I think I will repaint them as gloves.

I reckon they should be finished tomorrow night. If I do then the total this month will be eighteen full body miniature (well if you include Jose) and then a zombie breaking out from the ground.

I have got a cavalrydog, that I was going to use as a mounted officer. I might be able to squeeze him in before the end of the month.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

Undead Engineers A bit More Progress

Painting miniatures until my youngest falls asleep!

Not that you can really tell!

So anyway 20 minutes to the 25th December (well in this house it is, and in others it has been and gone). I hope you all have/had a great Christmas and that Mr Beardy leaves presents rather than coal.

Tonight (when the internet is working) I have been listening to…

Not to mention…

As well as….(well it isn’t Christmas without it)

And Finally…

This final one reminds me of a freezing wet and Windy December evening near Durham Cathedral. The choir were practicing and singing this Christmas Hymn. It was one of the loveliest things I have heard. The lights were streaming through the stained glass windows. I just had to go in and listen…

Undead Engineers…A Bit More Progress

I managed to get motivated enough to slap some paint on these fine fellows…

Still a fair way to go, but closer than yesterday 😁

As tomorrow is Christmas Eve, I really doubt I will get anything done.

If I don’t manage to get online tomorrow, I just want to wish everyone a happy Christmas. If you don’t celebrate it, then I wish you a peaceful and contented couple of days.

Undead Engineers…little progress

The title says it all …. so little done this evening.

Hopefully I will get some more done tomorrow night… maybe the run up to Christmas isn’t the best time to try and get stuff painted. I was hoping to get twenty miniatures painted by Christmas Day (15 have already been done)… mwa ha ha!

Somehow I don’t think that I am going to make my self imposed deadline, therefore I am going to aim for the end of the month.

On the upside, these chappies don’t have many belts or straps to worry about, this should hopefully speed things up a bit 🤔

Forgotten Forces Friday

Flaming Harriets… how can it be Friday again?

Anyway these forgotten forces were not found in the shed or the house for that matter. I had loaned them to a colleague who taught science in the primary schools and shared my office. He retires today and returned them. To be honest I had totally forgotten all about them!

So here we go…..

These will join the rest of my Magister dinosaurs.

Parasaurolophus (my favourite dinosaur)

T Rex

Stegosaurus

Triceratops (second favourite)

Gigantoraptor

Quetzalcoatlus

Velociraptors to the left

Troodon to the right.

These need a proper undercoat and then painted up!

This is some of the rest. The human hunters are for a little game we play… hunt the specific dinosaur, tag it and wait for retrieval!

And finally a bonus set of ‘warriors’

Snowball Wars by Okum Arts. These come out every winter for a grudge match…it normally starts out 2 on 2 but usually ends up three against me!

Undead Engineers

I was having a mooch amongst my gravestone sets and found the Undead engineers.

I managed to get them glued to their bases and then get a Bay brown undercoat. I will hopefully get some paint onto them tomorrow evening.

The following photo shows the fun and games that can be had leaving the island!

A Night Off

I painted sod all tonight… which remind me of a joke.

Lord Fartsagale dies without heirs, his last will and testament is read out and various parts of his estate are left to his loyal staff.

To Smithers, his loyal man servant of many years, a man who had seen his lordship through various ups and downs, he left Fartdale hall an old building with 15 bedrooms.

To his cook Mrs Higgins, a wonderful woman who kept his lordship well fed and watered, he left Widdle Hall a gran£ building with a great kitchen and 10 bedrooms.

To Grinton, his groom, a great man with horses who no doubt made his lordship a great sum of money through spotting great racehorses and training the same, he left Prior Hall, a spot with the gallop, the stables and 8 bedrooms

To Jones, his chauffeur, the man who dinged the Bentley, trashed the Rolls and lost the keys to the garage. He left Sod All…. one wonders how many bedrooms that had!

Sorry I will get my coat!

As I bought the 3D printer, today I made some STL file purchases from Fat Dragon. Tom was great and answered my various questions about what would be suitable for a newbie. He also advised me to wait until today as there would be a sale on. I took his advice and got some extras too. To be honest most of the stuff I got was free, my total spend came to $11.99. This was the purchased set.

I got this set as I thought it had a fair few useful bits and bobs to try out. The other things were a test cube to help with setting up the printer, the free dungeon sampler, and a crater. There was something else but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was???

Now to be honest, I have used Fat Dragon for years, but only their card stuff. They set up a YouTube channel to support their products but also support 3D printing too. The printer I had been considering was recommended by them too, so all in I am a happy chap…apart from one thing. I am actually quite nervous about the whole thing. I think it is partly a cost thing, although cheap by 3D printer standards it still came in at just shy of £200, Christmas money and the sale of toys will cover the cost, but at the back of my mind is the worry that I won’t get on with it! Only time will tell I suppose. No doubt after building lots of Lego on Christmas Day I might actually get around to building my present 🤣

On a totally different note I was at a meeting today and in the room was a map if Shetland from 1744.

Now there are a few interesting things about this map. Firstly they don’t care about inland stuff, it is a map for seafarers…the various islands are all named, even the smaller ones. The proportions are way out, but fair play to them they did it by eye and line if sight etc. One of the other interesting things is the note on Fair Isle…Famous for the best hawks to be had anywhere. Interestingly enough, there are no hawks on Fair Isle any more! I love the fact that we were part of Orkneyshire!

Meriadoc Brandybuck

I managed to get Merry from bare metal to finished in just over an hour.

Another figure found in a box. He is being added to the December challenge. So far this month I have managed fourteen full figures and a zombie upper torso bursting out of the ground. Ten days to go, so I reckon I can get a few more in before the end of the month.
