Who Turned out the Lights?

So tonight it was a bit like a Barry Manilow concert in here…

After two days of gales, on the nice calm day following, we have the power cut. Personally I reckon a starling sat on the power line and caused one of the damaged poles to give up the ghost.

Needless to say I didn’t try out painting by candle light, I mean I could have tried it, but chose discretion instead. I did however, get to fondle my new toys!

Evidently these are the instructions and painting reference!

More Painting!

Oooh am I on a roll or what, yep I got the vox caster finished this evening and I need to get the straps on the blankets painted then they are pretty much done (oh apart from metallic insignia).

I also worked on my wizard and minotaur.

I also got paint onto other bits and pieces too. Not a huge amount but if I had the pot open then I found something to add that colour too.

The three miniatures above are ancient and this is the first time any of them have seen a pot of paint. It’s funny really, when I played the games then I didn’t paint them, not that I don’t play the games they get paint 😂😂

Snow… What Snow?

So after a number of weeks of whiteness everywhere we awoke to pretty much this this morning…

I think I prefer the snow, the winds are up to to about 60mph, gusting higher, and at least is rain rather than snow. A bit miffed I never got my Valhallan’s photographed in their natural environment. Unst has warned that its roads are remaining closed due to severe drifting snow.

Okay to be fair it is about 40 miles away as the crow flies from my house to the centre of the island and indeed, when we were first up here we went for a day out to Unst and turned around due to drifting snow, which by time we got back to the ferry had totally disappeared.

It will soon be spring, except we don’t really have a proper spring, it’s more like winter, a few days of sort of spring then Summer. On the up side it there is still light in the sky gone 17.00 now.

Hopefully I will get more painting done this afternoon.

More Painting?

Now I am not a scientist, but who would have thought that not playing with the kids on the PS4 would actually mean there is more time to paint things…weird eh?

Anyway I actually managed to get a couple of things finished, upon saying that I reckon that I could do a bit more on each one…

I also got some more done on the bits and pieces from Warhammer Quest…

I made a good start on the missing Vox Caster, he needs his coat darkening to match in with the rest..

I must admit, I have found it difficult to get motivated of late, my painting table in the lounge is covered in random half painted miniatures, which probably isn’t helping.

I have got some more stuff from my mate to paint up, a unit of Space Marines and some Genestealer cult miniatures. I have said that I want to get some of my stuff done first…

I ended up looking at more miniatures today, but was pleased with myself that I didn’t buckle and hit the purchase button. I toyed with the idea of getting rid of my 15th Century Perry’s cavalry and replace them with the Agincourt ones. I needed some cavalry quick for Lion Rampant and that was all that I could get hold of at the time (plus the earlier ones weren’t even a thing). I could have purchased metal ones, but they worked out as double the cost of the plastic’s.

The one thing I am really considering is the ACW ironclads, not sure why, but it is an itch that is getting itchier. Stupid thing is I have no real interest in ACW, I can pick some up cheap enough for the printer, but to be honest, it would be another pile of STL’s sitting there on the external hard drive.

Painting…on a Roll?

Tonight if it stayed still long enough I threw some paint on it.

First off I got some undercoat onto a pile more figures, then I finished the flag as well as getting various skin tones on anything I could see that needed it.

So, even though the Valhallan’s aren’t finished, I have managed to get something done on a few projects.

The snow is still here and someone decided to see how thick the ice was on one of the nearby lochs. The eventually prized a bit out 9 inches thick, which to be honest is quite impressive.

Blizzards, Flags and Snow

Yes we are still in the grip of winter here on Shetland, now some may think it is normal and although in other parts of the world on the same latitude we would be ice bound and having to fight off Polar Bears, we are lucky that the Gulf Stream passes close by and keeps us relatively warm. However every so often we get a decided chilly snap, and we certainly have one now. This morning at 07.30 we were down to -10 C and at 09.00 a mere -5C. The last time it was this cold was 10 years ago when my son was born. It was so bad then that the health visitor couldn’t get to see my wife for two weeks… on the up side it is nice in the snow…

Not a bad morning to walk up the track to get to the car…
Looking across the frozen loch…this is tidal. Not a bad view from the local shop though…

Tonight when we went to do the horse, a blizzard set in, luckily the yard’s owner brought him in so we could head back home…

It’s windy and snowy… I hope I don’t need to go out tomorrow!

So after I got back in I did a bit more in the flag… still a long way to go, but on the way…

Working on the Flag

Tonight we played games with the kids until quite late so I never really got anything done. I did manage to get another layer of the grey-blue on the flag as well as tidy up the white bits, the red centre will have a gold skull in the centre with the usual battle honours (wish me luck on that one!) it will have gold and silver on it too as befits a regimental standard.

A Bit More Work

So I got on for a bit more this evening, whilst watching Evolution with the kids. Not a huge amount but still slowly pushing onwards to get these finished.

The flag is now a slate blue colour, not sure what the centre will be yet.

Really just some tidying up, the skin tone, and some of the unit insignia to do and then sort out a fur colour for the hats. Should hopefully be finished by Friday.

It is a bit like trying to think through fog today, but I have sort of broken my rule on not buying any miniatures, but these are some 1/35 native Americans to do as a diorama. I fancied something a bit different (as if I haven’t got enough to keep me going). This is what I went for in the end….

There were some really nice options. I quite fancied a horsey one but thought I wasn’t quite ready to make reins out of plasticard, so instead I choose something with loads of War paint. It should be here by next Wednesday. Now to be honest if there had been a Samurai one I would have gone for that 😂

Hopefully I will have a better day tomorrow, and be less in a harrumph. This lockdown is getting to me more than the first one… on the upside the sky is still light at 17.30, not daylight, but the year is certainly turning.

Did I Actually Achieve Anything?

I spent this evening watching the Firth Element with the family and painting Valhallan’s and an Ork… the problem is I cannot really tell where I have been.

Actually I can tell where I have been with this guy…

As for the Valhallan’s, mainly rolled blankets and the like on them…

Today my son’s mate came around to ‘play’ in the snow. My boy decided he wanted a barbecue, so winter barbecues are now a thing in our household 😂.

It was really pleasant when the sun was out.

I forgot to say last night that the car started being an arse. It is still a bit lumpy today, looks like the injector is blocked again. Hopefully it won’t take long as the other one really isn’t designed for snow.
