Neglected Miniatures…Almost Done…

Well when I say almost done I actually mean the first unit is almost done.

Just the skin and hair to do, along with tidying up and a bit more highlights. Not quite sure where the zoomed in image went, but this one will do. I have stopped hating these now, I still don’t like the barding but, it will have to do 😬

As I had the brown paint out for the bases I gave this chap his first undercoat. I say first as I intend to give him two to hide the printer lines. They can really be seen on the following photograph

To be fair though I reckon I could tweak the printer settings to eradicate these a bit more. This was a test print to see how it went. But I suppose to look at it another way it weighs 4 Grams and at 0.018p per gram then it cost pence… and when looked at from this distance…

The lines are a lot less noticeable. I can tell who he is and that he is armed with a bow. So to be honest I am not going to worry about it that much. I will try another print sometime in the future with the Fat Dragon miniature settings dialled into the printer.

Tomorrow I hope to finish off the cavalry. There will be a short hiatus with the infantry as my 40×20 bases need to arrive.

Neglected Miniatures… Boots and Cloaks

I did a bit of painting this evening…

I managed to get a fair bit done on these tonight, well in the amount of time I had. Still a lot of shading and highlighting to do but I need to do the weapons, flesh tones and hair. Then onto the bases.

The velociraptors got a quick bit of blue, again that needs shading, but the smaller dinosaurs are using up the spare paint on the palette.

Then onto the infantry all 125 of them 😱. That reminds me I must buy some 20x40mm bases.

Neglected Miniatures…Manes and Tails

Only had a little bit of time tonight to do these. Part of the evening was looking for a new, second hand car and the rest was working out some more of my adventure for ‘The One Ring’ RPG.

Still a fair old way to go on these but a teeny bit of progress is indeed progress. They are at the old I really, really hate these stage. Part of it is because of the barding which to me isn’t really an Elvish thing, the other part is because I get to a certain point in most models and hate them. Probably they are still a bit messy. As each layer goes on they will get better and the happier I will get with them.

As I was drawing maps this evening my two youngest also drew maps. My daughter drew this one.

She has also decided to write a story based on the map.

My son also drew a map…

Evil Daddy told them to turn off technology, but they really enjoyed doing it so a win, win situation.

Neglected Miniatures…A Bit of Progress

I managed a smidge on the cavalry tonight…

I decided to do them all the same colour for the horses and the barding. The next question is what colour for the mane and tail.

As I was messing about with grey paint I decided to paint a pair of Troodon. A quick couple of minutes to get them done.

I will get some flock onto the base tomorrow.

I would have got some more done, but my good lady and I decided to watch ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’.

It really was amazing, I had seen some of the footage before, but obviously not in colour. I will watch it again soon.

Neglected Miniatures… Making a Start

Well I actually got my butt into gear and found some bases and got the cavalry and mages glued down and primed. Considering that these are 10mm they are amazingly detailed.

These are just primed with some Coat D’arms rust colour. I am still in two minds whether to make the riders a uniform colour or not.

I could do the barding all the same colour then add in a bit of differentiation into the cloaks and tunics.

I will have to wait and see until tomorrow. I had better watch the hobbit again to get some ideas of Mirkwood Elves.

Forgotten Forces Friday

Well it’s another FFF day.

This time this will tie in with the neglected models in February’s Community Challenge. This lot are a Pendraken Warband Army pack. I chose Wood Elves as I like Wood Elves.

There are about 125 infantry, 12 cavalry and a command group as well as a group of mages. I decided that I wouldn’t use them for Warband, but would base them up for HOTT or something similar this will match in with my other Forces.

They are nice miniatures, as can be seen from the mages and their pet squirrel below.

So my plan, if I leave the 3D printer alone for long enough, is to get as many of these based and painted as possible by the end of February.

I also evidently got a command group for my Barbarians so I can add those to my list too.

I only hope I have enough of the smaller base sizes!

Friday’s Forgotten Forces

By heck it is round to Friday again.

Braving winds and heavy rain I fought my way to the shed to locate something forgotten…. it wasn’t hard they were sitting in full view on the mini shelves I made out of scrap wood from the builders yard in Lerwick.

I remember really enjoying painting these chaps. They are for Science versus Pluck, not the main forces as they are in 10mm. These chaps are there for if things get tricky and a player is forced to resort to hand to hand.

The idea is that the player faces a random number of attackers who are trying their best to fill said player full of holes. The various sergeants and other ranks are there to help out depending on what their personalities their character has. A beloved officer will have a rescue force, a hated Officer will find very quickly if he is spear proof as the other ranks look the other way.

The rules themselves are somewhat Kriekspeil in their design. The players are all against an umpire or two who operate the terrain and the enemies. It is definitely not a case of I go, you go. Turns vary in length from hours to minutes and indeed in my campaign I am organising (well I started yonks ago) the allied forces begin the campaign in Blighty…they will need to organise forces to relieve Khartoum but from the Red Sea port of Suakim. One day I might actually get to run it. I have played a couple of games and the rules worked well.

So onto the forgotten forces…

British officers and other ranks:

Hussars and an intrepid reporter for the Illustrated Gazette

Some of the gentlemen whose aim is to fill the above full of holes…

There are also a pile of camel mounted ansar seen in the first photograph (not to mention a pile of undercoated infantry).

Because I am a wargamer, whilst looking at these photos I realise that there are some gaps.. naval brigade, a Gardner gun if for no other reason that it can jam after firing seventy rounds… Mounted officers, civilians etc….

All of the above models are Peter Pig 15mm miniatures. I toyed with the idea of going for Perry 28mm’s but decided to keep the scale smaller.

We as we are mentioning the Sudan war of 1885…

The sand of the desert is sodden red,
Red with the wreck of a square that broke;
The Gatling’s jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England’s far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of the schoolboy rallies the ranks,
“Play up! play up! and play the game!”

To be fair the square didn’t break, it opened up and let the enemy in, and it was a Gardner that jammed, not a Gatling…but now I am being a pedant….

Monday’s Modelling Support

Sadly not what it might sound like.

Tonight I helped the local Boy’s Brigade troop(?) with some model making.

Myself and the young boy I was helping got this far with a 1/144 scale Tornado.

I am used to painting things in 10mm but never had to build anything like this. Some parts were absolutely teeny. We will carry on Next Monday.

The other thing I managed tonight was to add some writhing creepers to the Triffid.

These will need painting up to match in with the rest. The ends will be purple to match the top of the plant.

October update

What I managed to do last month.

A whole host of 10mm Mongols…

And a few more 👍 Medium cavalry this time. This Mongol army is probably four years old. The actual Mongols had subjugated most of Eastern Europe in less time. There are the heavy cavalry and infantry to go, but I needed an army for the HOTT tournament this coming weekend.

Then a HOTT Conquistador army. These were my Birthday present in July 2017 or possibly 2016…they all blur into one 😱

There are also two units of spears and one cannon that were also painted.

technically the 10mm Amazons were finished in October, for the simple reason I didn’t get them finished in September.

Medium Cavalry Finished

Finished apart from the Flag… what colour should it be?

I have still got to add the bushes to the bases and possibly paint the flag a different colour but otherwise I am calling theses done.

It was quite handy having only half a dozen bases to do this time.

One last random photo….

They are never going to win any prizes, but I am wanting them done and out of the way as they have sat there for far too long.

Still about the same total amount to do, but I am going to have to change gear and move onto my HOTT army next as I need it by 10th November.

I have decided on a Conquistador force. Not sure of the composition yet, but I am seriously thinking about Leonardo Da Vinci’s tank from Alternative Armies to act as a Behemoth.

It is definitely in keeping with the army type.

I could probably knock something up myself but for speed I think I will just buy one.

So 15mm for the next week or two, then back to the 10’s.
