And Now For Something Completely Different

I have taken a break from painting to making…

Shoes…

After years of re-enactment and then a hiatus of 12 years. I am getting back into again with a new-old period.

Since moving to Shetland I have been going into schools dressed up as a Viking. Partly to do my bit to show what Vikings look like as opposed to the Up Helly Ah version of vikings. Look it up, it does look impressive… they are what Victorian’s thought Vikings looked like🙄

So after starting first Century AD Romans a long, long time ago.

Then moving up though the centuries (years not cohorts). I moved to 3rd century Roman, 15th century and then Napoleonic infantry and then cavalry. Ending as a Polish Lancer.

The photo above is me in Poland.

I loved the Lancers, but there isn’t much call on Shetland for a Polish Lancer and as getting off the island costs hundreds I had to call it a day. On the up side, my stable kit still fits. Sadly my full Uniform went to the group as I had no use for it.

I also sometimes get the chance to play silly Buggers as a knight or a gladiator.

Me as a knight in a castle, sadly a very early 17th century castle but I allowed this inaccuracy to slip past me to support one of my favourite school’s activity day.

Anyway back to the Vikings…my new group is to be Viking. A couple moved up here who are well into their Viking Living history. So we are going to make a go of it. Well Unst does have a reconstructed long house and longship.

My soft kit needed replacing anyway, but instead of just me, we have to kit out five. I am starting with the youngest’s shoes as they are the smallest and easiest.

I made a test shoe out of spare white felt.

The leather was rather brittle so before sewing I had to soak everything in oil to try and make it more supple. Well 12 years in a shed probably wasn’t the best place and conditions for it.

Wish me luck as it is around 18 years since I made turn shoes.

Two Drummers Drumming

I was a bit busy off gallivanting yesterday

I did manage a bit of painting last night.

The second drummer is nearly up to the level of the first one. I must of had a shake doing his strap over the shoulder though. The first one needs a highlight on the flesh etc. Some of the dark blue and red also went onto some of the civilians.

Early on in the day we explored a broch in the north of the island. This was an Iron Age structure somewhat tumbled down after 2000 years of wind, rain and theft for building houses.

The base of the wall can be seen in the foreground, this would be heightened with peat. It is thought to be defensive, the site itself is sitting on an islet in a loch. The wall covers the causeway from side to side. You can see the causeway in this photo.

Further buildings are on the far side of the tower. You can just about make them out near the water’s edge.

This is the kind of size it would have been:

We also had a mooch about some crofting period click mills.

They were close to the edge of some of the tallest cliffs on Shetland.

This one has access to the sea through a subterranean tunnel. Well access if you don’t mind a 90m climb to the rocks below.

We found the grave with an interesting epitaph. We had heard about it but never seen it.

The afternoon was spent in one of the local shows where one of my daughter’s cockerel won third place in the bantam class.

All in all a very busy day!

Le Compte de Pommes Frites…

Has he had his chips in New France? We will have to see.

My command group is now finished, well apart from the sergeants and drummers.

The mounted officers, without some oik waving a Flag in the way.

The drummer is part way through being painted, he still has a fair way to go.

I am about to make a start on the Militia well I think they are…some idiot threw away the packet they came in and Essex Miniatures doesn’t have pictures for all of their ranges.

They seem to have a military coat, but no sword or, in some cases, even a bayonet. I will have a look for a uniformed militia unit and base these on an original unit. As you can tell by the paint on the civilians I was trying to use up some blue from the officer and drummer.

Ils Sony Finis…… Suivant

Well after a bit of a hiatus, I eventually got the French line finished.

I am rather pleased with them…

And next (suivant) I decided to get the mounted officers started so that they can ride the horses I finished.

As they are all the same pose I went for different uniform colours to give a bit of variation.

Once they are done it is onto the civilians and more militia.

The nice thing about the next lot is that they can represent either side.

Oh and the headless horseman kind of represents himself 😁.

Looking at this photo has the advantage of stopping me trying to find my second drummer..he is evidently already undercoated!

nous avons joué dehors

I took some of my French chappies outside to play…

I thought they might look better outside, instead they became washed out. Really only a wash to do, some highlights on the flesh and a bow at the nape of the neck. Oh yeah and the cockade on their chapeau. Not that I know what colour it is.

I am going to spray my other ones later before the thunder and lightning arrive tomorrow.

I was hoping to get the next lot earlier this week, but it looks like I won’t be spraying them at the same time.

Dormez Vou? Oui!

Well okay not exactly sleeping.

I made a teeny bit of progress last night. They have a base coat of Cadian fleshtone.

I will give them a highlight of Kislev flesh tonight.

The reason for lack of painting…a new game

Now for the disclaimer…. funnily enough I would never shoot an animal in real life. I have in the past, what people may call vermin. I didn’t enjoy it, but to be truthful I did enjoy the bit right up to where I pulled the trigger.

I now stalk the odd otter, seal or other wild beastie with a camera. As I only have an 80×200 zoom on it I have to get pretty close.

I have enjoyed what I have played so far. There is 50 square miles to mess about in. I enjoy the tracking a particular animal down. Yesterday it took me half an hour of real time to track a wild boar. Up hill and down valley. The wind was always in his favour, hence the time it took. When I eventually caught up with him the game glitched and he was running about in a weird pattern. He was one lucky pig!

The worst bit is seeing how many animals I spooked. It breaks it down into scent, sight and sound. Based on those scores there were a lot more animals about than I had even seen.

the game itself is beautiful.

I snaffled these from the game’s website. The PS4 version probably isn’t as high definition as these but it is pretty close.

I shall carry on exploring the countryside in Central Europe. I should be able to find a bison and bear.

Frère Jacques – Dormez-vous?

A bit more on my French tonight.

Knapsack, woodwork, metalwork and bayonet finished. I also managed to get some more done on the horses.

The palomino is looking a bit washed out, it needs a bit more shading and highlighting. The black leather on the bridle etc probably aren’t helping.

I was hoping to get these finished this evening, but as I started late it meant it was not to be.

Tomorrow I shall attempt to start earlier….

La Plume de ma Tante….

Well I managed a whole lot more tonight.

Tricorns, swords and boots black. Cartridge pouch red leather, equipment straps buff.

I also managed to get some paint onto the Officers horses.

The one in the foreground is to be a palomino. The paint was a bit thin to cover the black. I rectified this after the photo was taken.

The infantry have their knapsack, weapons and skin to do as well as the ribbon on the tricorn and that’s them just about finished.

I still have around another twenty to finish here and another 60 coming from Blue Moon so I need to keep the momentum going.

I Became Nostalgic

I suddenly found something on EBay I played years ago and just had to have it.

I had this and PanzerBlitz years ago and remember enjoying it. Hopefully I am not viewing my recollections through rose tinted spectacles!

I must have played through the various missions numerous times. (The problem is I can’t remember the reason why I got rid of it).

The map boards (x4) are basic but they do the job. From what I remember each represents 250 metres.

Finally the counters show the unit type..

The numbers show Attack strength, range, defence and movement. The letters show weapon type.

I will have to give it a go and see how I get on.

And He’s Off….

After two days off procrastination I managed to start.

Not exactly the greatest progress in the world but it is a start. Cuffs, breeches and turn backs all done blue (no doubt at least one of them will only have one cuff done).

I am not sure why it took me so long to get going again.

I also managed to finish this lot.

This is prior to them being shaded. So all in I managed about an hour and a bit tonight.

I saw another blog today talking about motivations etc so here is mine for this project

Motivation to do this period. Really High. I was going to go into 10mm using the Pendraken range but a mate at the club gave me his painted Blue moon French marines and woodland Indians (a few of the marines can be seen in the photo above). So 15mm it became.

Knowledge of the period – Minuscule. Does reading/watching Last of the Mohicans count? To be fair I have read a bit since getting started on this project, but not to the level of some gamers.

Uniformology – (not sure if this is actually a word) my knowledge on uniforms is two fold. Osprey and re-enactment groups. Oh and the Junior general website. That’s about it.

I chose my French regiment based on their flag. I liked the red and black of La Sarre. They even were in New France👍. See I did a bit of research.

Junior General is helpful in that it gives pictures of figures as they are paper soldiers.

I also don’t worry too much about the exact colour of the uniform. I use what paint I have (providing it is close enough). Some purists have probably bitten through their brush at this point. I have spent long enough in this hobby to stop worrying about such matters. I have had enough “that blue only came out in April 1815” or “the ammunition pouch should be grey, not black” over the years. This is not to say it isn’t important to some people, it clearly is…to them. But it’s a hobby. Life’s too short to fall out over a shade of blue.

I suppose what I am saying is each to their own.

Playability – to be honest I have one side (some rangers have been added to help this). The other person in the club who started this project too works off shore. Therefore few and far between. Not to mention I have so many different projects on the go, games might be even further apart.

Rules – To be honest, I haven’t a clue. We are going for a Skirmish/small unit style of game. We toyed with the idea of Sharp Practice, Chosen Men and another couple. The men who would be Kings would work with a bit of tweaking.

Tomorrow I will endeavour to paint some more.
