Basing Gunk

The perils of mixing by eye!

I needed to make some basing compound. A simple mix of sawdust, acrylic paint, PVA glue and a touch of water.

To begin with it was too dry, so I added some water, it was then too wet, so I added some more sawdust – too dry, more water…Eventually I got the consistency to something close to what I wanted.

I have located everything I could find to cover and I have used less than a quarter of the total made.

I decided not to add it to the ghouls as I wanted to get some more paint on them tonight.

Evening Gunners III

Another small step forwards.

I would have got more done but I decided to get a base coat on the ghouls, four base coats later I just about managed to get them green.

I think another couple of coats and they will be roughly the right colour. The joys of a Black undercoat. This is exactly the same green as the gunners.

The uniform is dark green with red turn backs, collars and cuffs. The colpack is black as are the belts and boots. As elites they have gold detailing.

Caroline wasn’t much fun

Well you know it is windy

when you cant get your door open to climb out.

Thankfully we got away with stuff thrown around the garden, roofing felt off the aviary and stable roof and a hole where the aviary wall used to be (thankfully we were using to house our hen and chick so nothing escaped.

Some others weren’t so lucky.

Caroline 1, caravan nil

This evening we are due strong winds and snow. The joys of living in a windy place 🙂

Moulding

Well after a successful set of gravestones I thought I would give something smaller a go.

I was less than impressed with the outcome. The mould wouldn’t take the detail. Personally, I think it was because of using the Lego box. The base level mould was quite thick and I think I put the weapons in too deeply and then there was quite a thin layer on the top. I used the pressing device to add the next layer in and I think there were air gaps that basically didn’t allow the moulding medium to ‘flow’ properly around the weapons.

I had some green stuff handy so I used that. It has come out as a flexible piece which isn’t really useful, but the moulding is quite blurred and I will use it on bases and things like that but to actually put in the models hand? I doubt it very much.

I have redone the process with both a new mould and used Milliput. We shall see how it comes out.

Experiment Extension

I decided to carry on building from the plastic sprues. In the end I managed to make 15 plastic zombies. 12 are undercoated and 3 are still a bit wobbly until the Glue sets.

So we have:

a Liche with 12 plastic zombies (3 are still drying)

Half a dozen zombie artillerymen

A giant werewolf from the Visthowla legion

And… a highland lass, absolutely nothing to do with Flintloque; I just liked the figure.

Now to paint them….

An Experiment

I was hunting for some paint last night and came across a couple of boxes of GW’s Zombie Hordes. I had a look at the sprues and then at some of my Flintloque stuff. I was surprised to see they were a similar size. I was wanting a set of lowest quality troops. I think I have just found some. What is better is that they are pretty much free as I bought the original boxes about 15 years ago.

I suppose the downside is that they are all armed with hand weapons, which to be honest is probably appropriate for the lowest of the low.

Something a Little Different

I decided to paint these as my friend is having a big birthday this weekend. I had them sitting there doing nothing so it seemed an ideal opportunity to get them finished and given to someone who would appreciate them.

It is my intention to get a scenic base done for the sniper to sit on. He may not get it for his birthday 🤨

Voltigeurs Fini

These took forever, for a couple of reasons. One I am taking longer to paint things. Adding washes and glazes, then attempting to multi layer things and secondly because life and work got in the way.

I still can’t take a good photo with this IPad, the lights I have set up at work, actually do a good job of lighting things up better, probably because I have the a foot away from the models, at home the lights are around 3 feet away.

Onto the Undead gunners and Visthowla legion werewolf tomorrow.
