Lady Boniface Part II

Her ladyship loses face.

As the gallant doctor rushed to support her ladyship he very quickly realised that to her ladyship losing face had a whole new meaning.

I do like her ladyship the figure is really good with her either removing or putting back her face.

I need to get a glaze on the smooth out the contrast of the flesh tones.

I am not too sure about the yellow dress. Because it is an ancient yellow wash it has gone a bit shiny. Because it is a wash it has caused me problems where it meets the purple wash. I think a repaint may be in order.

I managed to get a bit more done on these two:

Still a fair bit to go, but I am getting there.

Finally another lady…

Madame Pompaboom and her manservant.

I bought this duo as I thought it was a fun little set. The manservant is employed to hold up Madame’s hair… complete with a bomb in the top.

I would have liked to have got more done, but it has been a busy day. We were tiling the floor under the cooker until about half eight this evening. I hope to crack on tomorrow evening but rumour has it we will be redecorating the kitchen!

Getting There

I managed to do a bit more painting tonight.

I think I have found another favourite character. I have always liked this figure. He is an officer of the quasi 6th Hussars. Whereas with the zombies, I went through a phase of hating them, I have enjoyed painting him from start to finish. I still have a bit to go on him but he is getting close.

The Golem whom I have named Egor is getting there too. The highlight is too light on the grey so I will either redo it or put a glaze over it, similarly with his head.

The doctor is just about finished too. I forgot to photograph him.

Madame Boniface is making progress…

I am not sure how I am going to do her dress. I did consider simply using a wash and if so… what colour?

Still a lot to do on her, hopefully she will be finished tomorrow.

The two cavalry are lagging a bit behind, simply because the blue and red I used on the others is in work.

My unpainted pile of Flintloque is growing again. I still have stuff on top of these from Christmas to paint. I still have to finish my undead artillery, they have sat like this since 8th December.

Not to mention everything else I have bought recently. My Bier and Bones figures to start with and I did order some more Finkelstein ogres and the resin Savant zombies, well there was free postage 🤣.

I am really enjoying getting back into the swing of painting every day, there are a lot more talented figure painters out there it is true. But this is about enjoyment of accomplishment.

I have been contemplating the way I disliked painting the zombies. I am beginning to wonder if it was a combination of oldish paint that didn’t flow that well (more like tar than paint) and trying to squeeze a bit of painting into a short session which is normally interspersed with telephone calls. Funnily enough I got them finished at home and that Was when I felt happier with them too.

Lady Boniface Et Al

I managed to get a bit done on these.

From left to right…

Egor, Lady Boniface, Officer 6th Hussars, a gentleman doctor and a couple of Guard cavalrymen at the back.

I am hoping to get the front four finished soon. Most of the males have most of the base colours blocked in so I might get them done tomorrow night.

A Great load of Crates

I love watching the crafting videos on YouTube. They are often on in the background whenever I am doing anything.

There are many very creative people out there. My Crates came about after watching Gareth over on DMG. He built a crate, which I thought was a cunning idea, and made my own version of it.

img_3826

A few weeks later DM Scotty showed an even easier way to make a crate – a wooden cube painted to look like a crate. I thought this was rather cunning so ordered a set of 10 x 20mm cubes and 10 x 25mm cubes to give it a go. The two sets cost about £5.50 with free postage. They came all the way from China with free postage (I still cannot work out how that is financially viable).

Anyway, move forward a few weeks. The dreaded flu struck and my various bits and pieces sat there. Whilst in the recovery phase I watched Dungeons and Gluesticks. John was making crates too (all three videos probably spanned 3 years).

John also used the basic wooden cube but instead of just painting it, he used a razor saw to cut grooves into the cube. He then added the cardstock around the sides. It did look rather good.

I decided to give his version a go last night.

img_3867

Mine are a bit rough and ready but they do indeed look like crates. I could probably use narrower strips of cardstock on the edges. However, seen on a table a metre away I don’t think it will really matter. I didn’t bother sawing into the sixth face of the cube as I am going to base a lot of them in groups to act as a line of sight blocker and/or cover.

I made another one today on my lunch break.

They are indeed very easy to do; they take a bit of time but look the part and in my mind well worth the small amount of effort it takes to build them.

Bedtime Militia

And they are done….

Well apart from finishing the bases off.

After hating them less than a week ago I really like them now. Looking at the photo, I can see stuff I would change or add to. For example The chappy with the beard looks a bit of a funny colour for a start and his long coat could do with some more highlights.

I am really pleased that I found these as they have bulked out my undead forces basically for free. I bought these about 15 years ago at the very least so that money was spent long ago. I only wish I had another eight or ten. If some come up on eBay cheap enough I might grab some but I reckon I have about thirty now so I have enough to keep me going.

Next up will be the remaining guard cavalry and attached officers and undead.

Not sure where I will go after that. I keep forgetting that I have some 15mm Ancient Germans and an undead army almost finished. I might bump them back into the queue. Then onto….. you know it is best not to think about the lead mountain that exists on my shelves.

Undead Militia III

I am getting there with these.

I have definitely turned the corner with these. I now am beginning to like them. They still have quite a way to go to get them finished. Unfortunately the majority of the base coat colours are in work so some of the highlighting will have to wait until tomorrow evening. I will probably do something with the white eyes add a yellowish tint to them.

Finishing the bases will also make a big difference to them too. It was nice to be able to just sit and paint for an hour.

I would have done some yesterday but after replacing three walls on the aviary and the tiling behind the new cooker I really couldn’t be bothered.

Undead Militia II

I managed a bit of painting this Lunchtime 🙂

img_3857

They are now at the ‘I hate them stage’ as they need a second coat on the red and bits need tidying up. I always am amazed that they come together in the end. Although not a Golden demon painter I do the best that I can and it is better than I used to be so progress has been made.

Once they have had their washes on they will look better I am sure 🙂

Dark Future

The Game of Highway Warriors

My little boy wanted to get my AvP figures out and go on a bug hunt, we have been sorting out lately and the figures were out in the shed. As it was raining, we thought we would try something different. He didn’t fancy x-wing so I dragged this out of the cupboard.

My two youngest and I had a bit of a race. Somehow I ended up with the Renegade with a light machine gun. Whilst they both had Interceptors with a heavy machine gun.

Sadly over time the boards must have been damp and have warped rather badly, but we still had fun.

I am trailing behind, letting rip with the machine gun. Sadly, for me anyway, I dropped too far behind and ended up out of the race, running over a mine probably didn’t help.

He dropped his last mine and his sister took a lot of damage, but not enough to stop her.

As he sped towards the finish line she let rip with her heavy weapon and, although technically he won, he crossed the finish line with his car, not to mention his body in tatters.

They have decided they want another bash tomorrow evening.

Drastic measures are being taken to flatten out the boards before tomorrow night.

I do have Gaslands, however I haven’t sorted out the dice or templates yet. We may progress onto it when I get them done.

5028 Bier &Bones Shilling Service Pack

I have been pondering getting the Flintloque Bier and Bones Game Book for quite a while as my campaign is going to involve a Witchlands force pushing South. I decided to take the plunge with the last of my money from the sale of things I don’t use any more.

Rather than just buy the book I was going to get a few figures to make the postage worth the while. I looked at various types. The new releases were definitely on my list. Othari aristocrat, Hobgoblin miser, the new resin savant zombies. So I did my usual trawl through the various lists and came up with a list (this normally ends up at around £60 with my “oooh they look nice” or the “oooh I could just do with some of them to bulk out my forces” routine). I started perusing the Finklestein list and was enamoured of the ogres. It was then that I remembered the Shilling Service Pack.

I had £30 left to spend so went for it.

They came today and I am rather impressed.

So What did I get in my box?

The box came well wrapped and well protected with scrunched up brown paper to stop everything shifting about.

The rule book was inside a plastic sealable bag, which I thought was a good touch to keep the weather off it, The figures and dice came in the smaller box.

The book is 96 pages long covering troops and a bit of background to the conflict in the Kartoffelberg. I have Ostarian troops anyway so it is useful for that alone. I love the cartoony illustrations in the book they are full of life.  Most pages are black and white with some colour pages showing painted examples of the different models.

The first seventy odd pages deal with the actual troops and background  – the last twenty odd pages are the rules for the game. They are very well laid out and easy to follow.

The bag also contained a two sided piece of A4 that takes you through the process of choosing a section giving them skills and traits and then onto three scenarios that use the troops in the box.

Now onto the figures:

As mentioned earlier these came in the box, well wrapped in bubble wrap

This set consists of 11 models and two dice. It comprises 2 ogres, 3 Finkelstein dwarves and 6 Krautian dwarves to fight them.

The dwarves were all in the same bag and the ogres were in a separate one.

The 2 page sheet shows the two forces in case you are in any doubt. But to be honest the Krautians are in a uniform and the other dwarves are not, so there shouldn’t be that much confusion. The second ogre was wrapped in his own bubble wrap to protect him a bit more as he has a halberd blade acting as a bayonet and this extra protection was to ensure it didn’t snap off.

Let’s look at the dwarves:

These are lovely figures and full of character. To be truthful, the camera doesn’t do them justice. The Krautians look rather resplendent in their matching uniforms whist the Finkelstein dwarves have a bit more of a rag tag look about them.

Regarding the Finkelstein Dwarves…The two nearest the camera have no visible weapons so will be ideal for civilians or spies. The one at the back is armed with a sword.

The Krautians are on the whole armed with Dwarf Muskets MKII. The officer is armed with a sword.

The thing I like about the Alternative armies minis is that you have to spend quite a while looking for flash lines on the whole. The bugler has a bit between his legs and one of the ogre has a bit on his shoulders but on the whole they look like this.

On the hat it is noticeable but on the rest of him not so much. In the past I have had to turn the figure upside down and look to see where the mould line is on the base and follow it round to find it on the figure.

The Ogres look rather spiffing too.

The ogre on the right is armed with a Kannonderbus and the one on the right is armed with a double musket with attached Glaive as a bayonet.

So to end with… This set cost me £32.50 with a flat rate of £5.00 postage. Stamps alone came to £3.90 so not to costly on the postage.

I decided to add everything up to see if I had made any savings.

The rule book is £17.50

The nine dwarves @£2.00 each come to £18.00

The two ogres are £9.00

And a pair of dice at £1.00

Now by my calculations (I actually checked it three times as I kept thinking I had done it wrong as it looked a massive saving)…This lot if bought individually would come to £45.50. A massive saving indeed.

Now if you are thinking about getting into Flintloque then these Shilling Service packs are a definite saving (as is the resin Escape from the dark Tzar (5024) 10 figure set).

The Shilling packs at present are as follows:

SSP04 Bier and bones

SSP01 War in Catalucia

SSP02 Death in the Snow (Witchlands campaign)

SSP03 Grapeshotte (artillery set)

In my own personal view they are well worth their money (financially definitely).

Once I have sold some more surplus materials I think I will go for the Grapeshotte set. (This will mean I have all four books – The Witchlands book is an electronic one)

Airbrushm

After nearly 5 weeks I switched on my airbrush for the first time.

Here we have a couple more Guard cavalry and a Ferach surgeon and a hussar Officer as well as Madame Boniface and Egor (they say he is a golem, but to me he is an Egor.

I purchased the airbrush primarily to undercoat figures and terrain. To be honest it took a little working out. For example you have to lift the dial to change pressure before turning it however the instructions don’t say that the name it and say turn to alter the pressure.

The back nut on the airbrush needed loosening a bit to get the paint to flow properly. But to be honest it took about 5 minutes to work everything out.

I deliberately purchased airbrush paint as I wanted to reduce the number of variables that I needed to work with straight off. There are loads of YouTube sessions showing how to make your own airbrush ready paint.

The temperature today is about 1.5 degrees and blowing a gale. Not good spray painting weather. The thing I loved about this airbrush was the control of it. I painted each one whilst holding onto the base. Yeah my glove got a bit of paint on it, but compared to a spray can? Hardly any at all!

The paint layer on the figures looks really smooth. So all in all I am a very happy person.

This is the one I bought. It isn’t a Badger or any of the other ‘top’ makes but it does what I want it to do and that is good enough for me.
