Ruins

This is another Cardstock building from Dave Graffam. I still have to edge it in a grey Sharpie. Sitting elsewhere is another one with a different stone pattern on the outside and bleached wood on the inside. It also has a chimney 🙂

I was about to go out and get MDF ruins and indeed bought a Black Ops mdf building as a starter. however I have come tho the conclusion.

Firstly the card is a whole lot cheaper. I got the above for $3.95, However it has multiple layers so the cost of 3.95 can get me at least 4 different models. Basically it gives me this amount of variation:

  • Stone walls
  • Wood walls (exterior and/or interior)
  • Stone corners
  • Stone foundation
  • Brick walls
  • Plaster walls
  • Beams
  • Several window and door positions
  • Flagstone floor
  • Stone floor
  • Wood floor
  • 4 layers of debris
  • 2 chimney positions (or none at all)

Now to be fair, I have to factor in print costs, which I am frankly not sure about. But I have found a quote from Ryman for 86p per colour sheet on 160gsm card. So for the building above £3.44 multiplied by 4 will give me a total cost of £17.66 including purchase of the pdf.

Now my dark ops mdf ruin is £16.00 plus £3.50 postage. I still have to build and paint it.

An equivalent sized ruin from Dave is 5 sheets with roughly the same purchase cost.

The MDF is a lot more sturdy, but both it and the card can warp if they get damp, and both don’t do very well if they are dropped and stood on ….I know from experience.

I have however cardstock buildings that are over 10 years old.

Dark ops mdf is really good as they design their pieces to avoid any of the gaps in the walls and roofs where the bits fit together. And to be honest their walls are a bit better in scale.

This is one of my earlier ones:

Three sheets of card from what I remember.

Dave Graffam Ruined Building

Dave Graffam Model’s Rock!

I have had a pile of Dave’s card models for a while, so as I bought Frostgrave I thought it would be good to do up some more of the buildings. These will also work really well for my Flintloque games too.

I got mine from RPG Now, but the site below is Dave’s own

I ran a piece of acetate through my printer to get the leaded windows.

To be honest I messed up this kit a fair bit. I forgot to join the two walls together before I stuck them down, this meant that I have had to glue the boxes down onto the wall to support the the corner not to mention adding one to the wall.  I will put one on the other wall to support the joint to the base too, because being the pillock that I am I cut of the base supports too!

All in all this is a really nice kit. I would advise actually reading the instructions which are very comprehensive, unlike me. I had forgotten to print them off and though how hard can it be – thereupon lies the problem :). I  have a number of others to build so I will hopefully learn from my mistakes.

I can make my own ruined buildings out of blue foam etc, but with this costing  $2.95 it doesn’t really seem worth it. I got another three ruined buildings in this purchase, one each with a number of skins so I can have quite a few buildings from the 4 sets.

I have a couple of these with accessible interiors as well as a number of others…http://www.davesgames.net/catalog-fantasy-accessible-interiors.htm

Another batch finished.

I managed to get a bit done today. I really need a better camera and/or better lighting as they look a whole lot better than the photo shows☹️.

I have decided to make a start (aka carry on with) some Ferach voltigeurs. These guys have sat for about a year with just their base coat of black.

Teatime Trollkin

I managed to get a wash on the clothing. Figures always look naff at this stage, it can get a bit disheartening especially when you look at the amazing work some people do.

Bedtime Trollkin

I managed to  get some more of the base colours done this evening. They are lovely figures, they do, however, have faces only a mother could love. They work for Trollkin though.

Brougham

After building the turnip cart, i had a go at building the Brougham. I had a few problems with this- more user error than the actual model. There was o ne bit that looked a bit different to the instructions, but to be fair it want rocket science to work out what went where. The turnip cart was easy to make, this one really did need some kind of instructions to make sure it all went together properly.

It is a really nice model, I really do like the way it actually has steps to allow the passengers to get in, not to mention 2 little holes, designed I would imagine, for the carriage lights. I do have one minor niggle with it (probably due to Warbases trying to get everything to fit onto one mdf tile) the pole for the horses is too low. Coming from a house where my wife is a carriage driver it is really making my head hurt lol. The horse might get a leg over the pole and that is not good at all. Now do I leave it or do I do something about it. My thoughts were to build it up with milliput and then cut away part of the mdf. To be fair once you get a pair in front of the vehicle it cant really be seen. Looking at the image below you can see the pole coming out between the horses at chest height.

If I were to give it a score out of 10 I would give it about a 9.5. Probably not fair to lose .5 simply because I am being a bit anal!

I am not sure what colour to paint it, probably black or a dark blue.

The Brougham’s were used by individuals as well as by ‘taxi drivers’ They were also known as Growlers due to the sound of the iron shod wheels rumbling over the cobblestones.

The major problem I have is that the Brougham was ‘invented’ in 1834, about 20 years after I was wanting to use it lol!

Turnip Cart

Well I made up my first ever mdf model. Luckily I started with an easy one. The brougham is a bit of a more complex one. I still managed to snap a bit.

It would have been nice if it had been etched on both sides.

I might actually just get some balsa struts in there to break it up a bit.

Warbases Haul

Well as I have been painting so many flintloque minis She actually ran out of mdf bases. I like the ones for magnets. After trying for hours to remember where I got the last lot I remembered. Off to Warbases I went. My 60 mdf bases suddenly grew into a bit of an order including highland cattle, geese, heavy draft horses and lighter carriage horses. I only got the horses as I thought I would make a foray into mdf kits. As I am forever trying to come up with ideas for terrain/accouterments to match the models I purchased a posh carriage and a turnip cart. I also added a set of Lion Rampant and Jugula tokens too.

I really do hope I can work out how to build these as they don’t seem to come with any instructions.

All Creatures Great and Small

Had a diversion from Flintloque today at Lunchtime. Today I decided to get some of my animals finished. I have managed to finish the wolf and the Iron Age pigs and nearly got the Jacob’s sheep finished too.

Still got to get the bases sorted and magnets inserted. Job for this evening.
