A Single Horseman

Tonight I painted a mounted Celt. Just the one, but all done bar the basing.

I also stuck my debased miniatures onto some MDF circular ones. My order from Warbases came yesterday so I now have sixty new ones which should keep me going for a while. Sadly in reality this won’t last me that long as I just realised I have forty already painted that will need basing! Whoops!

Well luckily I have to order some bases for the chariots and now the extra cavalry… see how much this lot costs!

Painting Celts…Again

I really struggled to get motivated this evening, luckily I has undercoated some more miniatures… I reckon if I hadn’t then I would have achieved sod all.

So I did some foot and a mounted gentleman as well as slapping some paint on the chariot horses (not shown)…

Compared to the Warlord miniatures the Wargames Factory ones are a bit Fugly. The two at the ends are massive compared to the chariot driver in the middle. They are also a lot bigger than the Warlord one too.

Although I do like the horse, I really don’t like the colour.

More will be painted tomorrow.

Chariots and Cavalry

So here is my Warlord chariot, taken straight from the Angus MacBride painting I would guess.

These are the plastics..actually Wargames Factory and not Atlantic like I said yesterday.

These shaggy little ponies are exactly what they should be looking like. The one thing that bugs me about some manufacturers is that all of their horses are about sixteen hands high at the shoulder, instead of the sub fourteen hands they should be for the earlier periods. From the archeology it is found that the majority of horses in the Middle ages stood at thirteen  to fourteen hands

I mean even the Scots Greys at Waterloo were on fourteen hands and under. This it the standard upper height of a pony. If you bear in mind that I am 5’10 and not a skinny bloke I ride my fifteen hands and have also ridden Fjords and Icelandics and they are between thirteen and fourteen hands. I n case you were wondering a ‘hand’ is 4 inches.

Okay Rant over, not even sure why I had it …☺️

We tried Silver Bayonet tonight and the worst Dice throws ever occurred at the table. Thankfully they weren’t mine.

A rifleman did shoot one of my infantrymen, but in the final turn I managed to snatch victory in the last turn.

Nine More Finished

Well, once again it was a night of more Celts… I have now run out of undercoated ones… tomorrow night is club night so I won’t likely get anything done painting wise…

So I did the remaining ones that I built and undercoated yesterday.

Well I actually built twelve miniatures yesterday. Two were from Wargames Atlantic (from what I remember) the other was one of the Warlord. But here are the nine painted tonight…

Guess who forgot to paint the bases!

So that is thirty seven painted so far. With the painted ones from years ago takes the count up to about fifty. I have got a painted metal chariot done too,   but that is still down in the shed… along with half a dozen unpainted mounted troops, and from what I remember two or three plastic chariots too. Enough to keep me going for a while.

De-basing and Painting Slingers

Well today I managed to get my original Celts off their Gw bases, somehow I managed to keep all of my fingers. I did try really hard to remove at least one of them with a Stanley knife!

So after a few close calls I got this far…

I must have painted these at least fifteen years ago. Long before Contrast Paint. I vaguely remember being really pleased with these at the time.

The newly painted ones are still on theirs, hopefully I will get them off soon.

The metal ones should snap right off as they are on with superglue. I sadly used polystyrene cement for the others!

So I made another fourteen plastics and undercoated them. I also undercoated a pack of slingers. In the box were another three of the naked dudes charging with a spear so I painted another one. I will eventually get around to doing the other two and will add them as part of the wider warband rather than part of the fanatics unit.

So here the newly painted ones on their lollipop sticks waiting for their proper bases…

I went for more muted colours with these as the skirmishers were generally youngsters or people for whatever reason didn’t take part in the main battle line. So the one thing that really, really annoys me about the whole range – every bloody one of them has at least one gold torc, some of these have actually got two – one neck and one arm. I always thought El Dorado was a myth from the  Conquistadors, not the Romans!

As for bases, I have had to order a pile more from Warbases as I was totally running out of both bases and sabot bases too… Needless to say I went a bit mental by ordering a whole host of other goodies. On the up side I got free postage, on the downside free postage starts at £50!

So tomorrow I am going to try and get at least half of the undercoated plastics to the finished stage.

More Celts

So this evening I managed to do the undercoated plastic Celts. I still have a bucket load to make and paint but it is a start 😁.

So here they are in all of their still wet glory …

I will see what I can get built and undercoated tomorrow (or even find built and undercoated).

I still need to decide what to do about these bases… they are on them, and do do some of the earlier painted ones, problem is- I don’t have any more. Personally I don’t like them. I just have to work out what to do. The metals were fastened on with superglue, these are stuck on with plastic cement.

Family Trees

So a while ago I mentioned doing my DNA. Last week a lady reached out, it turns out we were a bit of a match… fourth cousins  from what I remember.

Anyway I decided to sort out my family tree mainly on my mother’s side. I have found loads more matches on both sides now.

I have ground to a bit of a halt as I am back into the mid 17th century.

This was early afternoon. I am now back two generations from John in 1710. William and Janet are the best match, with William’s father being about as far back as I can go. This my Grandfather’s side (Mum) with her mother’s side going back to about 1649.

I now have to delve deeper back into my Dad’s side. I have got back to 1815 with his.

Interestingly, two people have popped up in Australia and Canada.

Painting Naked Men… NSFW

Well if this doesn’t get a jump in views then I had better paint naked women 🤣😂🤣😂.

So as you might have guessed, the title is a bit tongue in cheek. I was at a bit of a loss as to what to paint, so as I was in the shed and I spied a pile of undercoated celts.

I went for the fanatics as they were the quickest to paint. These are all metal. I also found eleven plastic ones that were undercoated too. I have had these since about  2010. They were part of a batch which were going to be used in a campaign at the club that never actually got off the ground. As I bought Romans in the summer I thought I should maybe finish them off.

These are original Warlord Celt fanatics. Later they did the SPQR rules, but i can’t a remember what these were for. I got two packs of  them with a random selection of models. The one on the left of the photo is the only unique model out of the eight. I do remember being somewhat miffed about this.

I have two boxes of the plastics as well as some cavalry and chariots…. I know, I know… Early imperial Romans likely wouldn’t have met a chariot in Gaul, possibly in Britain as we were a bit backward.

These were the miniatures James painted last night. He is really chuffed with them as he should be…

As I am typing this I looked up at the shelf and noticed a pile of white patches on the celts… tomorrow I shall be touching up my naked men!

Froggy Boyz

Well this evening my son and I did indeed have our painting session. I managed to finish the frog riders. If I compare how I feel about these to how I felt about the Sisters then it is like comparing chalk and cheese.

I love these, I think in part because they are such a bonkers idea. Not one of them is sitting on the mount, they are all airborne in one height or another. I also love the randomness of the equipment. Yes I deliberately chose the options to make them this way, but again – bonkers. The lances in the description is frog cavalry with pointed sticks… and that is it down to a tee. They are just long sticks, not even pointy! The frogs themselves look bloody dangerous.

The one thing I noticed when I put them all together is thar the originals are in a polished silver and the new ones ate in gun metal… nothing a wash won’t solve.

So here they are in all their bounding glory…

With these, the frog colour is the unifying colour. If you think back to the frog herds, they were all colours and the leader was pretty colourful too…

In a way I wish I hadn’t gone as bright on the frog herds… at the time I was thinking poison arrow frogs.

James is still busy painting the chaos dudes. They were a present too him from Joe.

The big question is… do I go steppe goblins next… well obviously after I finish the peasants to go with the various knights. With regards to the latter, I have literally just scratched the surface.
