Mice in SPAAAACE…the final frontier

Well that’s them just about Finished.

A commander, squad of marines an a Heavy weapons squad.

These were quite a nice, fun set to paint up. If I had a criticism, it would be the mouse fur is a bit flat. Now a super artist would be able to paint the fur in, sadly I am not that man.

I could have painted up the flamethrower pipe a different colour (and still might) as I couldn’t think of a suitable colour.

Random grumpiness and Starship Troopers

Sadly not Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip

This hobby is a bit weird I have decided. Well okay the hobby is okay, I think it is me that is the weird one.

A couple of months ago I decided I needed some Airbrush paint so I poddled off to Amazon. I needed to spend ยฃ20 for free delivery. 5 x17ml pots of paint came in a lot less than this so I ordered a DVD. Starship Troopers ‘Traitor of Mars” I really enjoyed it so I bought all DVD’s that I could. All three live action ones, two CGI animated ones and the the whole of the Roughnecks series. Great fun…

Next thing is I want to game Starship Troopers. My mate has bought me the role play game for my Birthday. Off I went to find something suitable….That is when I hit the problem. Mongoose no longer provide the minis, yeah you can get them on eBay, if you fancy taking on a second mortgage.

I have Aliens, Predators and Colonial Marines….. I have space Marines and Genestealers and other Tyranid nastiness….. can I find anything suitable in any easy and straightforward manner…..No.

Everything suitable I have found that would work in my mind is either in the states or are in 6/10mm. Rebel Minis or Khurasan would work. Lovely miniatures but the cost of getting them here is rather expensive before getting clobbered by VAT and import duties.

Some awesome ones in 6mm but 6mm is a bit teeny when role playing. Pendraken do a Big Jawed bug which would work with 15mm minis.

Alternative armies have some Flesharon troops in 15mm.

Problem with 15mm is that all of my suitable terrain or maps is for 28mm.

Why am I weird then. I seem to either get interested in something just as everyone else is getting out of it, or I get out of it just as it becomes popular with everyone else.

I am seriously now considering making the bugs as card ones and the troopers as minis. Might stop me grumbling about not being able to get what I want.

A quick edit…

Problem solved….ish… not quite sure how to make the bug ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I must get some minis painted tomorrow as I am off for a weeks vacation on Sunday night. Off back to my old stamping grounds in Northumberland. Sadly I haven’t got much painted of late as I have been attempting to get various jobs done as my mate is coming over to animal sit.

Mice in SPAAAACE

A bit brighter than before…

Still some tidying up to do. Also a dark line around the armour joints and between the weapons and the hands. A brown wash over the gold would help too.

It’s about 25 years since I painted space marines, so I am not sure how to go about it properly.

The Werewolves were peering out of their box in a sullen manner. They were making me feel guilty!

I will have to get on with them tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

US Airborne heavy weapons

Now with added colour

I got a few coats of colour on these.

I was lucky to get a bit of help from a small boy, who wanted a go with the airbrush.

The colour of the uniform is not exactly right, as there wasn’t enough in the bottle I was given. The idea is to use this colour as a base coat and build up from there.

I will get on with the Space Mice and Werewolves tomorrow too…I hope.

Yanks without Tanks…

After the Tank success….

I have been asked to do some more minis. This time American Airborne heavy weapons.

To be honest I found these an absolute pain in the backside to put together. I reckon my spit would have bonded the pieces together better than my Super glue. It has now got me thinking, can super glue lose its superglueness. Well to be fair it does stick the objects to me and the table just not to each other.

Anyway there are two 81mm mortars and two 57mm AT guns.

I will hopefully get everything sprayed tomorrow evening.

On the upside evening at this time of year tends to last quite a long time. 23.15 and still daylight…it would be brighter but the cloud and general overcastness is making it a bit dim.

Mice in space…now with colour

I gave these a base coat of white with the airbrush. Then, as they were going to be purple, I mixed up my own airbrush paint. This was a little scary as it was a first, but it seemed to work. I ended up doing a few coats to get a really deep purple.

Mice in SPAAAAACE!

And now for something completely different…

I said I would paint these up for my mate. Not something you see every day… space Marine mice. They are to be similar to the Hawk Lords chapter…purple and Gold.

We shall see how I get on ๐Ÿ˜

Tanks …

I am calling these finished.

They could do with some weathering, but as I don’t have the water slide transfers, I don’t want to weather the sides and then have a white shiny insignia sticking out like a sore thumb.

I finished the M4 , the tracks were an absolute swine. I could do with filling in the gaps with Greenstuff.

No exposed commander on this one as I am not sure whether it is to be an American or British version.

Tank Spraying

As I had the German tank airbrush paint…

I thought I had better use it

This is the second time I have ever used an airbrush and the first time was to undercoat some 28mm figures.

To be honest I am quite pleased with the result. All the non camouflage colours are still to do, but my mate is wanting them a bit quickish, so I will see if he wants them as is or finished.

The Dunkelb colour has disappeared in places, but they still look camouflaged, which is a plus ๐Ÿ˜œ.

Werewolves…slow progress

Very slow progress

Subtle highlights on the green uniform and white breeches. Base coat of red down and white strapping painted in.

You can just about see the green highlights here.

Still a longish way to go. My paint brush looks like it is eventually giving up the ghost ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ. It wasn’t a Windsor and Newton super expensive one, but a cheap one that actually had a bit if a bend at the end. I found it really easy to use, but tonight sadly it started splitting down the middle as I ran it over the figures.

I reckon another couple of evenings and I will have these done.

On the upside, I found a regimental colours to fit the flag pole.

I may do another one, I have some with a full moon on, but they are the larger size version. The other option is to extend the length of the pole.
