Ludus Gladiatorius

I was going to run a gladiator participation game at this years games day. The problem was simple enough rules, that didn’t involve loads of complications.

The Rules I own so far are:

Rudis

Blue sky, red sand,

Jugula

Are you not entertained?

Warhammer historical – Gladiator

Gladiator wars

I was considering running the Warhammer ones, then by chance I came across a model arena in a terrain forum. This arena had a set of cards next to it…after a few people asked what the rules were. EM4 Ludus Gladiatorius.

I ordered a set on 19th and to my surprise the package arrived on 21st. Bearing in mind it normally takes an extra day to get things here. So a big thank you to EM4 for their excellent service.

The game comes with everything you need, including 5 painted Gladiators

The mechanics are simple- roll the combat dice and if the swords are greater than the shields then it is a hit. The tokens are for special actions – Savage attack, Feint, Dodge, Doughty defence. Each gladiator gets 7 such special actions and are crossed off when used. When played these are hidden from an opponent until the attack/defence is undertaken, this stops sneaky people changing their action to counter the special action played.

I will try it out with the kids today and see how it plays out. I know that EM4 are working on an upgraded set of rules, but these are nice an simple and ideal for what I want.

The one thing that I think is missing is a retiarius, but I think I have some knocking around somewhere. I should be able to knock up some stats based on the light gladiator in this set. He will probably be able to attack at a distance.

Update: I found my Gladiators and some lions….. just have to paint them now 😱

Next – Civilians and Livestock

The roof is finished and I am just about finished too.  However I am now able to get back to painting things.

Next up…. more Livestock and some Trollkin civilians.

The civilians are from Alternative Armies and the livestock from Warbases.

I still have this lot to go too.

I was going to spray them all tonight, but I needed to fill some gaps where the horns meet the head on the highland cattle and also to add some support to the goose with the snapped legs.

DIY stops Painting

In the words of the Drifters:
When this old world starts getting me down

And people are just too much for me to face

I climb way up to the top of the stairs

And all my cares just drift right into space

On the roof, it’s peaceful as can be

And there the world below can’t bother me

Let me tell you now

The Pugs are done

These little chaps are finished. They were a joy to paint. They are Jäger. Dressed in green and autumnal orange as a reminder of their forest villages in the foothills.

Next I am going on to Schwartzenbark and a reaper bones werewolf. I have bought one of AA’s Visthowla’s legion, this plastic one is roughly the same size so might be useful in the Undead ranks.

Warbases Haul

Well as I have been painting so many flintloque minis She actually ran out of mdf bases. I like the ones for magnets. After trying for hours to remember where I got the last lot I remembered. Off to Warbases I went. My 60 mdf bases suddenly grew into a bit of an order including highland cattle, geese, heavy draft horses and lighter carriage horses. I only got the horses as I thought I would make a foray into mdf kits. As I am forever trying to come up with ideas for terrain/accouterments to match the models I purchased a posh carriage and a turnip cart. I also added a set of Lion Rampant and Jugula tokens too.

I really do hope I can work out how to build these as they don’t seem to come with any instructions.

Jägerhund

I cracked on with the pugs tonight. Rather than the purple and yellow of the Von Mohlblume line infantry I decided to make these into some Jäger.  I have a back story, sort of, formulating as to the colours of the uniform. Needless to say I think these are awesome figures. Little pug light infantry snuffling their way into the fray. I particularly like the officer with his one eye and tongue sticking out. These hardly had any mould lines let alone flash or vent marks. It took me twice as long to clean them up because I kept picking up ones I had already done. In the end I actually had to put the done ones straight into a box to ensure I didn’t pick them up again.

Daughter’s Painting

I am rather proud of my 11 year old. She worked hard on these two today. All her own work, I gave the ideas on what to do. She is totally chuffed with them.

I can see she is going to want some more as she was very disappointed when she had finished them off.
