Warband Finished

I managed to get these finished in time for tonight’s game.

PVA is still wet in this photo and as the camera never lies… I can see all the bits I missed on the bases.

They were speedily done but to be honest I am pleased with them. The Wizard and the apprentice are both a bit bigger than the rank and file, but as this game is mainly about these two it seems rather appropriate that they are a bit bigger 🙂

The one thing that niggles me is the warhound. It is %*”!*% huge.

In fact it is nearly bigger than my bear. I got this bear from Warbases for £2.50 the Frostgrave bear is £6.00.

We shall see how my crew do tonight in the ruins of Frostgrave. Spells at the ready….

An in the Word of Ridcully the Brown – Arch-chancellor of the Unseen University…

Cometh the hour, cometh the … whatever. General comethness, perhaps.’

Or if all else fails….

‘Let’s get this over quickly, and have lunch.’

Bedtime basing

I think I saved these…

I have now got everyone onto the mdf bases. This took a lot of extra hole drilling, cutting off of plastic tabs and in the case of the dog lobbing some hot glue onto the base to support it.

Ready for basing gunk which is basically:

PVA

Sawdust

Brown house paint

Mixed together and plopped onto the base.

They are now sitting on the radiator drying off.

Next up is the angst of how to base them. Frostgrave takes place in a city that has just reappeared after spending one thousand years under ice. The question is…. do I add snow to my bases. If I do then basically Frostgrave and Icy areas are all they are good for. We shall have to see.

Lunchtime Mage

Dropped a clanger with these:

In my keenness to get these done I picked up the wrong wash for the colours on the tunic. My idea was a dark wash over the darker colours and a light wash over the pale colours… DOH!

Glazing has made some effect on the colour, but I do think it is going to have to come down to a bit of a repaint.

On the upside I do have a pot of Iraqui sand with me which is a darker tone than the Bonewhite.

With a mix of the two and a steady hand I may be able to paint it into the creases and even wet blend to the ridges.

We shall see how I get on… (Note to self – take the paint home with you 🙂 )

Bedtime Warband

Getting beyond the naff stage..

These are starting to come together.

Really just a highlight on the rank and file to do and a beard on one of the archers. Still got a fair bit to do on the mage and apprentice. To be honest I am quite pleased with how the colours have worked.

Speaking of colours. I decided to keep some paint at work and some at home, however for some reason I kept most of the metallics at home and the bone type colours at work. Methinks I failed a bit there. As they were mainly base coated at work I wanted to use the same colours to sort out any glitches with the magic users. Once they are tidied up I will give them a wash like the rank and file and take it from there.

I must also remember to finish of Wuffles …

This dog has more piercings than is good for him.

Evening Warband

Slapped some more paint on.

An hour to go before I get my eldest from Drama.

More colours added and they now even more at the naff stage. I am hoping that once they have a wash and a highlight they will look better 🙂

Onto the hair next …..

Lunchtime Warband

I managed to get a bit of paint on these:

img_3514

I am going for a limited palette for the rank and file the blue will only appear on the wizards and a bit on the Man at arms to show his superior status.

The lamellar armour for the lower class of troops will be boiled leather whereas the man at arms will be some form of metal not sure whether to do him bronze or iron???

These are still at the yucky stage…. neither one thing or another. My plan is to blast on with them tonight whilst my daughter is at her drama session. Two and a half hours painting time.

We shall see how we get on.

Frostgrave Warband

My Frostgrave Wizards….

img_3509

I had a hunt about for various wizards or proxy types to act as my mage and apprentice for Frostgrave. I had found my druid and dog handler from Warlord’s Celtic range. But they weren’t really right

I suddenly remembered I had the Mantic Games Dungeon Saga: The Dwarf King’s Quest.

I knew it had a wizard in it so that would work with maybe a Gandalf figure, however when I opened the box I realised I also had a metal Mortibris. I suddenly had both Wizard and Apprentice.

Although Mortibris is a Necromancer, I am going to use him as something different in my games probably a Thaumaturge:

Thamaturges draw their magical powers from positive energy. Most, though not all, believe this energy comes from some form of deity. These wizards are healers and protectors, who often spend as much time on good works as they do on the study of magic. Thamaturges rarely openly carry any weapon other than a staff and some find even that a bit aggressive. This is not to say that Thamaturges are pacifists, they just prefer to not rely on obvious displays of force. In appearance, they tend to wear plain, simple robes, usually of a light colour. They tend to favour hoods over hats, and wood and leather over gold and silk.

Ironically, they are directly opposed to the Necromancy school of magic.

The way spells work is that, I can choose three spells from my school of magic.

Banish, Blinding light, Circle of Protection, Dispel, Heal, Miraculous cure, Restore Life, Shield

One spell from each of the aligned schools of magic. (Soothsayer, Sigilist, Illusionist) These are at +2 difficulty.

The final two spells must come from the neutral schools; each must come from a different school. (Elementalist, Witch, Chronomancer, Summoner, Enchanter) These are at +4 difficulty.

The different schools of magic and spells are seen below.

Ruins

img_3504

This is another Cardstock building from Dave Graffam. I still have to edge it in a grey Sharpie. Sitting elsewhere is another one with a different stone pattern on the outside and bleached wood on the inside. It also has a chimney 🙂

I was about to go out and get MDF ruins and indeed bought a Black Ops mdf building as a starter. however I have come tho the conclusion.

Firstly the card is a whole lot cheaper. I got the above for $3.95, However it has multiple layers so the cost of 3.95 can get me at least 4 different models. Basically it gives me this amount of variation:

  • Stone walls
  • Wood walls (exterior and/or interior)
  • Stone corners
  • Stone foundation
  • Brick walls
  • Plaster walls
  • Beams
  • Several window and door positions
  • Flagstone floor
  • Stone floor
  • Wood floor
  • 4 layers of debris
  • 2 chimney positions (or none at all)

Now to be fair, I have to factor in print costs, which I am frankly not sure about. But I have found a quote from Ryman for 86p per colour sheet on 160gsm card. So for the building above £3.44 multiplied by 4 will give me a total cost of £17.66 including purchase of the pdf.

Now my dark ops mdf ruin is £16.00 plus £3.50 postage. I still have to build and paint it.

An equivalent sized ruin from Dave is 5 sheets with roughly the same purchase cost.

The MDF is a lot more sturdy, but both it and the card can warp if they get damp, and both don’t do very well if they are dropped and stood on ….I know from experience.

I have however cardstock buildings that are over 10 years old.

Dark ops mdf is really good as they design their pieces to avoid any of the gaps in the walls and roofs where the bits fit together. And to be honest their walls are a bit better in scale.

This is one of my earlier ones:

Three sheets of card from what I remember.

Frostgrave Boar

Well I bought this, basically because I liked it.

I have numerous GW giant rats, so in reality  I bought the set for the boar alone. A mighty fine boar he is.

img_3491drinking-horn-type-20-engraved-celtic-boar-296 He does remind me of a Celtic boar 🙂

The one thing I was a bit surprised about was the amount of flash and metal venting on the pieces. I had already started to clean up the boar but hadn’t got round to the  rats. On the upside the vents mean that they are good casts.

The boar will be used for various roles, but one of the ones I will look at is a boar hunt. This is a big beastie  so is a scary thing to hunt.

Updated Ostarian Colours

I decided to do a bit of colouring at coffee break, it was either that or scream and shout and start flinging things about the office….. I am calm, I am calm, I am calm……..

Anyway I decided to have a mess about with the Ostarian flags. The way the original triangles were coloured black and white caused a few problems, although not insurmountable they were still a niggle.

This is the updated result. I am not quite sure Which I like the best?

img_3501

The top is the original and the bottom the updated one.

I will have to have a fiddle around with some more colour combinations to work out which I like the best.
